I think McGwire's going to be seen as the best 1B of this era...

I think Bill James said McGwire's ratio of HR Value/Total Value is one of the highest of all time (he had Dave Kingman as the highest).

I think that's one of the main reasons McGwire is both overrated AND underrated (see: Dead's statement that McGwire should not be in the Hall because he hit .263). When you have one thing that you do amazingly well, you stick out in people's minds. Most people over-focus on the one thing that was done well... and many others over-focus on the things you didn't do well (hit for average, field).

Saw someone list Cal Ripken as one of the most important players of all-time, which was interesting, since I've always viewed him as someone whose consistency allowed him to be viewed as being much better than he actually was.

What?? And amazingly, this isn't even the dumbest thing in your post, b/c you followed it up w/ this gem:

[ QUOTE ]

Anyway, either he or Nolan Ryan are No. 1 on my list

You should never be permitted to post in this forum again.

I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Well, Cal isn't close to being the #1 SS of all time, but a lot of people think of him as such.

Nolan Ryan is, in all likelihood, the most overrated player of all time.

i think cal ripken is an easy choice here.

not saying he wasn't a really good player, but he wasn't the demi-god he's made out to be.

OK, I've stayed out of this so far. You're a stat guy Jack, what are you basing this on? I do not claim he's the best ever, or anything like that.

If it's the fan voting from the Mastercard thing, then meh.

Two players have been elected to the HOF by a 99% vote: Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan.

Let's be reasonable. Nolan Ryan was unlike any other pitcher ever - but he was far inferior to many pitchers. Nolan's probably not even in the top 25 all time. Maybe he's in the top 50.

It depends on the audience. Cal's a divisive figure and some people will vastly overrate him, while others will underrate him. He's mostly overrated because, let's be honest, how many people have heard of Honus Wagner and Arky Vaughan?

Cal was a very good shortstop, probably... I dunno, no lower than #6 all time SS, probably #3. A lot of people tend to look at his career numbers and underrate them, not taking into account that he was a shortstop, and shortstops still can't hit worth a damn.

I think top 50 could easily be argued. Top-25, yeah, that's tougher. But beating up Robin Ventura puts him in.

The reason this argument is so futile, is because it's hard to compare eras of "overrated-ness" due to the media coverage. The primary reason Ryan is considered "overrated" in my opinion, is the fact that he just happened to set his career marks - 5000 k's, 6th and 7th no hitters - in a period where media coverage was much different than earlier in his career.

Anyway, I don't disagree he had his flaws. But he still rules in my book.
