[ QUOTE ]
I'm sure OOT wasn't in the 2+2 business plan. [/ QUOTE ] any genre specific site is going to have off topic forums. Its what keeps a lot of posters at those sites. I go in waves of where I read/post, but I wouldn't be at this site nearly as much if it was just pure poker talk as far as splitting the forums, meh. I dunno. I normally try to at least see what threads have been made/bumped since I last visited, I know that many don't do that. An A&E forum would be pretty cool, but I just don't know how much traffic it would get after the novelty wore off. I know that I would go there, but that makes very little difference to anyone but me |

Second point: We're debating about people who don't come into OOT - these are by definition completely unrepresented here. Don't make tons of assumptions. It's best THEY get asked about this too, somehow. [/ QUOTE ] How, exactly, do you propose to do this? I have a hard time imagining that there are really so many people just waiting around for the day when a forum that doesn't frighten them can come along so they can post their film reviews in peace. |

"General Discussin" or "Other Topics" forums are like recess for the mind. Every site has it. |

Does anyone see my point here? [/ QUOTE ] Absolutely, and that's not really the way it was presented. If OOT is so busy that posts of a specific nature are getting lost and would get more attention on their own forum, that makes sense to me. I think you could then make an argument for a separate tipping forum, a separate alcohol forum, and a separate medical advice forum, but obviously A&E is going to attract more traffic. This idea had an elitist bent to it at the outset, but if it's a logistics issue that's a horse of a different color. |

I think a better solution would be to stop people from filling oot with stupid [censored] like "I have to [censored] and vomit", "how big is your dick" and the such.

[ QUOTE ] I'm sure OOT wasn't in the 2+2 business plan. [/ QUOTE ] It wasn't in the plans, but it's most certainly part of the current picture. If people want to discuss things on these forums other than poker, we're all for it. I don't know that the issue is people being "afraid" of this forum more than just being turned off by it. I personally find the number of topics here overwhelming. If there was a forum devoted to movies, books, etc., I don't know how much I'd contribute, but I would certainly be an avid reader. |

[ QUOTE ]
What I don't like about a split is the inevitable corollary -- A&E discussions would be banned in OOT. I don't think OOT in spirit is really about specific topics, but it's treated like that. So when you say "No A&E talk in OOT", "No Science or Philosophy in OOT", "No P*ker", "No Sports" -- To me that's just stupid. It's possible to know which forum is which and choose OOT for a thread. I understand why you don't want the threads clogging the forum but a hard and fast rule is autistic. That's my 2 cents, I know most people and most moderators disagree. [/ QUOTE ] i don't disagree actually. i think your point is well-stated. i would much rather have it be a place where people could post the occasional computer question or whatever. i think you're dramatically undestimating the value of precedent in oot though. for an example of how snowballish things get, look back a week ago to the 'ask me' phenomenon. i'm not passing judgement on that here, just pointing out that it happened. and everything happens like that. if you let one off-topic post go in, others will post them too. if you stop any of them, they will point at the ones that made it through and say WAAAAAA SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT INJUSTICE WAAAAA. so the fact is, a hard line is mandated. anything less results in total clogging because of copycats. |
