[ QUOTE ]
According to the article he was trying to keep up with McGwire and Sosa. [/ QUOTE ] Nope. According to the article it was all about McGwire. [ QUOTE ] The authors describe how Bonds turned to steroids after the 1998 season because he was jealous of McGwire. Bonds hit 37 home runs in '98 -- a nice total and the fourth most of his career at that point -- but he was ignored by fans and the media who were captivated by McGwire's 70 home runs and his duel for the record with Sammy Sosa, who hit 66 that year. According to the book, Bonds, in comments to his mistress, Kimberly Bell, often dismissed McGwire with racially-charged remarks such as, "They're just letting him do it because he's a white boy." There may be something to what you say, but it is also true that he hit .187 his last year and claimed to be in constant back pain.

[ QUOTE ] "They're just letting him do it because he's a white boy." [/ QUOTE ] Letting him do what, juice? What does this quote mean? [/ QUOTE ] I think he's implying that MLB knew he was on the juice and they only let him get away with it because he was white. |

I wonder what would have happened if he never used steroids. How would that have affected the division races, playoff series, and MVP voting during that time? The same thing goes for Sosa, assuming he used.

[ QUOTE ]
"he's a hack." Not sure what "hack" means here. If it means he's not a good player, he was a helluva player before 'roids. If it means he's a jerk, I agree. [/ QUOTE ] yeah i guess it means jerk, but more than that. a jerk who is undeserving of all of his accolades. obviously he was a good player before roids -- but i think it would be tough to find someone that would argue that he would have made the run he did at the record books without the aid of steroids. |

[/ QUOTE ] Probably not, but Barry Bonds was one of the top 20 position players of all time before he started using, and probably #2 on the all-time LF list. |
