Women seem to love hugs and as long as they are not creepy hugs, go with it. Some do it on varying degrees of knowing that person, but in general, I think it works well - unless you are getting a bad vibe.

This old chestnut eh.
Well in my experience it depends on how much i've had to drink.
Between 0-2 pints then i usually stare at the floor and sort of grunt in their general direction. Then spend the rest of the evening hating myself and having a crap time.
Between 2-5 pints i just smile and say hello.
Any more than 5 pints and i usually just go straight in for a frenchie which if they reject me i can easily turn into a full on headbutt.
So on reflection 2-5 pints it is then.
