I remember when Gregg Jeffries was supposed to be the next superstar and everyone was snapping up his cards. I also have George Brett's Topps card from every year in a display. Too bad the whole thing is probably worth only $5 now

I also have some Mike Greenwell and Matt Nokes rookies that can be had for the right price
The whole reason they're worth sh*t isn't that the markets not there, it's because you have a Barry Bonds Topps rookie and so do 135million other people. They would still be worth something if that had started doing the serial# thing back then and limited each rookie to like 2000 prints. If you have a Cal Ripken Jr RC #'d to 2000, it would be worth quite a bit (IMHO).

what i learned about baseball cards when i sold all of mine:

they were mass produced to [censored] in the 80s-early 90s, those are mostly worthless. nowadays the better cards (rookies for example) are numbered, so for a certain set there will be only 1500 or so rookies for a certain player.

grading is everything too, if your 85 mattingly was graded really high (like 9.5), it would probably be worth something.

i was able to get rid of all of my cards for either 50 or 100 bucks, cant remember. i was glad to be rid of them.

I have about 120k baseball cards from late 70's to early 90's and about 60k MTG cards.

If I put them all in one big pile, how long do you think they will burn?

90's cards aren't even worth anything now Same with most bat and autograph cards with the mass production of those now.

Only cards I'm hanging onto are my Bonds collection, 01' Prior RC, 01' Stars Albert Pujols RC, and my 84' Topps John Elway RC

Anything after ~1984 was mass produced and not worth much.

I sold my 60,000 card collection about 10 years ago, I am not sure if it is up or down in value from when I sold it.

It is a dangerous business though, I once met a card/toy dealer who had stacks of Nolan Ryan, Wayne Gretzky and Mickey Mantle rookie cards. Once he got one card, he could make as many as he wanted.

Not quite true, although certainly true for many brands/years. There are some specific boxes though that are worth a bit. 85 Donruss/Fleer/Topps boxes for example that sold for $10-$20 in 85 are $100-$150 now. 87 Fleer, 89 Upper Deck, 92 Bowman, 93 UD SP, 95 Bowman and Bowman's best, those are gaining some value.

One of my favorites is the 1992 Stadium Club Hi Series football packs. Topps and the NFL had some licensing snags over players like Jerry Rice and Joe Montana, who weren't in the first two series of Stadium Club that year. So Topps eventually released a Hi Series pack, in a somewhat limited quantity. That Hi Series happened to include a certain Green Bay Packer QB as well - and that card is now more valuable than his true 91 Stadium Club rookie. Legit unopened packs that sold for probably $1 in 1992, are worth about $20 now. I have a few of them.

That sucks. I have boxes and boxes of cards from the 80's sitting somewhere at my parents house, a lot of them all pristine and protected in those stupid plastic things.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have a lot of 80s baseball cards sitting in my mom's house too. They only sat under 8 feet of water for about two weeks, so the damage is minimal. Anyone want to buy them? I'll give you a 10% discount for the flood damage.

Are they the packs that have gum inside?

If they are, the famous Topps gum might actually be more chewable now than it was when originally produced.

Remember when 87 fleer Will Clarks were the big thing?

[/ QUOTE ]

No, but I remember loving Will Clark, Robbie Thomas, and Bonds as a kid I think every year I switched who my favorite player was on my little league baseball card.

That's Robby Thompson
