[ QUOTE ]
OK, three scenarios here: 1) You are talking to someone. You introduce yourself. 10 seconds later, you realize you have no idea what their name is. 2) You decide to do something (grab a bottle of water, maybe) on the way out of the house. You realize you forgot something and turn around to grab it from your room. You forget your initial task and leave. 3) You are watching something on TV. Commercial comes on, you flip channels and watch something for a few minutes, then totally forget about the first thing you were watching. Just curious, how many of you forget stuff like this, and how often? [/ QUOTE ] I do stuff like this all the time. It's maddening. |

1) Tons
2) Rarely 3) Often, but I don't mind. Also, I read these forums for a few minutes almost every day, and I cannot keep 99% of the regular posters straight. I mean, I recognize the name and the avatars, but unless you posted in SS back in the late 80s or are one of a choice, random few, I have no idea who you are. If, for the length of a thread, I disagree, agree, fight with or mock you, by the time I see you again I won't know you from Adam. Also, if you're a mod, please change my undertitle to 'less is nothing' Thanks. |

Question - in professional situations, like conferences, client meetings, intra-company whatever, does ever forgetting a name come up? That was the main motivation for me to try and remember. Also I think it's a bit rude to forget people's names (I am a bit of a nit).
I find I don't have to do the "repeat a name" trick, just requires a touch more focus upon introduction. -Al |

what about: you plan on writing an email. You fire up your browser, login and see that you have a bunch of new emails. You get caught up reading/answering all your emails, get done there, surf 2p2, youtube. You close out your browser, waste an hour of your life, and still have not sent the email.

Does it happen, yeah. But mostly in larger meetings where you didn't pay attention to who's on the invite list. At Google, if it's a meeting where you could have a reason for your laptop, you open up calendar, see everyone who's invited to the meeting, then cross-reference on our internal HR db that has photos and info on everyone. Then you mispronounce the name. At other jobs or if no laptop action is possible, you just look at the person when you want their attention and carefully avoid any construction that requires a name. |

1. Happens almost 100% of the time if I don't care about the person, and almost 0% of the time if I do.
2. Sometimes. This one is the weirdest, and it's strange that this happens to anyone ever. I mean if you think "oh I forgot my ipod" and then you go back to get it, but forget it a second time, then that's a huge parlay. 3. Almost never. This is basically because the only time i ever watch tv is if I make a plan to do so. I don't channe; surf. |

1. almost always
2. once in a while 3. pretty often 4. this happens a bit but I feel like this one is just a result of laziness combined with a little bit of whatever makes #2 happen. |

[/ QUOTE ] i'm at the point now where when i meet someone i just promise that i will very likely forget their name and they shouldn't take it personally b/c i just suck at names. that seems to work ok |
