[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] El Diablo, I think dumb people who take pride in being dumb are even more annoying. [/ QUOTE ] Southerners? [/ QUOTE ] Ever been to New Jersey, Long Island, or South Boston? [/ QUOTE ] It amazes me how many people seem to embrace the fact that they aren't intelligent. Most of the people on facebook have "wut iz a book" or something similar listed as Favorite Books. [/ QUOTE ] My favorite is "why are you using those big words?" As if by speaking English you're doing something wrong and insulting them. |

[ QUOTE ]
The topic of gambling brings out the worst in people when it comes to thinking they are intelligent when in reality they know nothing. "I win every time I got to the casino," "I have a system for XXXX" "I rarely lose" "Sometimes you gotta just call with any 2" "I had pot odds" "I win at slot machines" [/ QUOTE ] But you can win at slot machines, in fact, there are actually slot pros. Some machines are not only +EV, but are in fact advertised by the casinos [and regulated] as such. My peeve would be people who don't know how to count cards at BJ criticizing my play because they read half an article on basic strategy when drunk. SHUT THE [censored] UP YOU AS SHO LE! |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] sometimes they'll do something that lets you know they are really smart or really dumb. [/ QUOTE ] I find it's easier to deduce intelligence from witnessing dumb things, rather than smart things. This is because we often can't understand things that are "smarter" than us, but can easily see when someone does or says something dumb. In other words, I'll start everyone off with like a 140 IQ, and just deduct points for every dumb thing I hear them say or see them do*. It's easier this way than starting at 100 and working "up". Of course some people don't say much or do much so it's tricky. *This is probably a really dumb way to guage intelligence, and I should deduct 5 IQ points for utilizing this method. [/ QUOTE ] Good in general. Smart people probably spend a lot more time unable to express themselves despite their intelligence than lording it all over. They can only give a hint of themselves because anything more is inappropriate. So in a way their intelligence might as well not exist. It can just lie trapped and untapped within them. About judging people for doing dumb things, though -- some people are just absent-minded, tired, or stressed. You know the stories about how Einstein couldn't even remember his own phone number or address. I think I might prefer a simple-minded sort as, say, a taxi driver, than someone weaving all over the road as he pondered deeply. Pondering might bring out the bumbler in people. |

Going with the theme: Fat people who think they aren't (annoying level 7) Skinny people who think they're fat (annoying level 9) [/ QUOTE ] Fat people who think they aren't are way more annoying than the other way around, especially if you do a lot of online dating and have to meet them and say, "wtf????" [ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] It amazes me how many people seem to embrace the fact that they aren't intelligent. Most of the people on facebook have "wut iz a book" or something similar listed as Favorite Books. [/ QUOTE ] I don't see how this makes them dumb. You don't think they actually think "what" is spelt "wut" do you? [/ QUOTE ] It's the attitude that's the problem. These people genuinely don't read and don't ever plan on it, and just because they are aware of that doesn't make it better. In fact, it makes it worse, because they could change if they wanted to. You can make fun of yourself for little things, or things you can't change, but abandoning reading is too big for that. Acknowledging that it's true, and not doing anything about it, that's the tragedy. [/ QUOTE ] Agreed that this is a dumb thing to think or say. Further, it's not funny or interesting, so it misses on every important count. Aside from which, for most people, it is absolutely true. Most adults do not read books, and of those who do, most read only one per year. |
