Metallica is also completely one-dimensional, while the Smashing Pumpkins are arguably the most multi-faceted major-label band in history. [/ QUOTE ] i was just going to type 'lol,' but then i realized that perhaps subtle gradations of 'angsty' and 'whiny' may now be considered a multitude of facets in contemporary rock. so sad. |

the Smashing Pumpkins are arguably the most multi-faceted major-label band in history. Whether or not that's applicable here, i don't know. When we're talking about "great bands" it's a defining characteristic in my mind. [/ QUOTE ] wow |

Metallica is also completely one-dimensional( agreed ), while the Smashing Pumpkins are arguably the most multi-faceted major-label band in history. Whether or not that's applicable here, i don't know. When we're talking about " bands with one extremely talented member who wrote, sung, and played everything but the drums; a slightly above-average drummer; and two other members who pouted in photos and stood around onstage " it's a defining characteristic in my mind. Beach Boys
The Velvet Underground The Doors Bruce Springsteen & E CCR I consider these the best moreso for their influence on sprouting many genres of music and perfecting their own music. If you just want bands that were more popular you could never include the likes of VU, but I think they belong on my list. |

Nice that the Pixies are getting so much love on this thread and I'm sorta surprised that no one has mentioned the Byrds yet.
In no particular order, I'd go with ... The Pixies The Beach Boys Velvet Underground Credence Metallica or Nirvana (pick one) I'm not real sure that any of those would come close to cracking England's top 5 list. |

2005 Poll says Pearl Jam #1 Aerosmith comes in #2.
Since then Pearl Jam put out their best studio album in 10 years. They are definitely on my list as well. CCR and the Beach Boys I can't argue with. GNR would make my list. Then I have trouble deciding between the Doors and Aerosmith to round out the 5. No particular order CCR Beach Boys GNR Pearl Jam The Doors |
