I consider these the best moreso for their influence on sprouting many genres of music and perfecting their own music. If you just want bands that were more popular you could never include the likes of VU, but I think they belong on my list.

2005 Poll says Pearl Jam #1 Aerosmith comes in #2.

Since then Pearl Jam put out their best studio album in 10 years. They are definitely on my list as well. CCR and the Beach Boys I can't argue with. GNR would make my list. Then I have trouble deciding between the Doors and Aerosmith to round out the 5.
