[ QUOTE ]
I don't need liberal neighbors as long as I'm not ostracised for it. I've been through the south and there were parts of like Missisippi-George-South Carolina where I felt like I would get boycotted if I didn't go to church, join the NRA and vote red. Especially in the small/country towns I'm thinking of, if folks don't like you it can be difficult. [/ QUOTE ] If it's at all like (North) Florida people will leave you alone if you mind your own business. (South Florida is not the South.) |

Actually, now that I think of it, my hometown of Gainesville is quite liberal (college town), very nice climate, gorgeous women, and has lots of small towns and rural land all around. Lots of natural beauty to enjoy (a lot less than the smoky mountains or something obv). Try near Tallahassee too, I'm sure all the same apply.
My dad just had a house built 20 miles outside Gaineville on 20 acres of oak and pine with access to a private lake. I don't know how much this property is worth but it's a lot less than a million dollars. He lives a half mile off the hard road and no one bothers him. This sounds kind of lik what you're looking for. |

why do so many people believe that the south is just like those dumb horror movies they watched on TBS as a kid?
People in the south are friendly, as a general rule. This applies whether or not you are Republican or Democrat, christian or athiest, black or white. Like anywhere you go, if you start harassing people about thier religion, or other beliefs, you are not going to be treated politely, as you were not polite in the first place. You aren't going to get ass-raped because you like Hillary Clinton, or support gay marriage. |

It's a bright blue spot in a part of the state and broader region that's otherwise nearly solid red. |

OP,
Seriously, if you don't mind rain, just head north on I5. When you see the "Welcome to Oregon" sign keep going for a 2-3 hours and then start looking for a place to live. It's rural, cheap, and while not liberal by any means (unless you're in Portland, Eugene, Salem or to a lesser extent Corvallis) it won't be as bad as other rural parts of the country. |
