50,000 years ago the spot where I am sitting was under a mile of ice. Hmmmmm ... did cavemen use suvs to melt all that ice? 2,000 years ago wine grapes were growing in Greenland and Northern England. Hmmmm.... what did they use to cool the planet?

[ QUOTE ] Science is wrong many times. Science is not always the truth. Science can not agree on this issue. Even if they did it wouldn't mean much. The Earth goes through cycles that are far larger than 100 years. Do a search on earth timeline. For huge amounts of time you need to break it down in millions of year piece. 100 years no pattern can be determined that has any value. [/ QUOTE ] If I remember the movie correctly, by drilling out ice core samples, you can collect climate data back a lot farther than 100 years. But I still think it's stupid to watch a documentary and take every single piece of information as 100% truth and immediately change your life because of it. [/ QUOTE ] Well, I watched "Super Size Me" and immediately stopped eating cheeseburgers....for two days. |

Wow, you guys are a tough crowd. Do you really care this much that a documentary influenced someone? I can't even fathom why it would bother you so much that he uses his blog to spread awareness on a topic he thinks is important. How does this make him a nutjob? I don't understand all you lemmings that claim he's lost his mind, etc., just because he chose to comment on something that he had never considered before.

What I have found interesting is this is one issue that devides political parties. For some reason, republicans feel it's not true and democrates feel it's fact. Why is that? DN is a Canadian and Canadians have always had a feeling that we need to respect the earth. I live in Vegas right now and ride a bike all the time. I rarely see anyone riding, the bike path is full of kids on stake boards, no other adults riding. I am not a teen ager or in my 20's.
No one recycles here. I got both of my jobs to start. I was really struck by the difference in attitudes towards "being environmental" |

Is al gore flying around in a jet telling me I should drive less? [/ QUOTE ] No, actually he flies in passenger planes throughout the entire movie. Are you suggesting that it's hypocritical to take realistic measures toward protecting the environment and also fly in a passenger plane? |

[ QUOTE ]
It's a small step that millions of americans aren't making. But he's atleast doing something. [/ QUOTE ] That is the problem not the solution. One of my problems is that people are just "wanting to do something" without thinking that through. You may feel good about "doing something" but if your something doesn't really help, so what? How about we figure out what to do that would really help before spending trillions of dollars just so we can feel all warm and fuzzy about "doing something." NCAces |

I really think the fact that DN is a vegetarian or christian plays any part in any of this...From what I can tell, he got that from his mother and frankly if ur parents were vegetarians, its likely you would be one too.
Movies like that and "Super size me" are meant to show exactly what the show. If it affects people for the better than whats the problem? I commend him and others that have the ability to make changes for the good of the environment and do as opposed to those who act as if they world is theirs to use. Be glad there are people out there who are willing to take lines they think will help the greater good and arent just doing things to help only them |

I was really struck by the difference in attitudes towards "being environmental" [/ QUOTE ] FWIW, there are a ton of threads on this in Politics (many very recent). As to the politcal bias, I have wondered about that as well. Through some of the threads in Politics I think the following causes the divide: 1. Assume as fact that the Repubs are the party of corporate America, the rich, the consumers, the business owners, the tax majority payers. Obviously, any fix would impact them more than the Dems. DON'T argue the points here ... go to Politics ... just saying these are reasons they tend to be more skeptical. 2. True conservatives tend to be more wary of governement, and tend to be more capitalistic, and anti-socialism. The "fix" for this for many will be large governemental intervention, while conservatives will argue that the market will solve the problem. They will also assert this is a way for the anti-capitalist to try and cripple the capitalist economies. So, what does this have to do with the Science. Nothing directly, except that if the science supports that the global warming is human made, and something has to be done, what has to be done is against the beliefs and interests of the Repubs (used in a very general way), and therefore they/we are going to tend to be more critical of the science before we start solving the problem. As a final note, the "sky is falling" rhetoric, and having Al Gore as your chief spokesman doesn't help things. All the more reason to be a skeptic in my mind. Finally, let's go to Politics to discuss the science, etc., and discuss DN here. NCAces |
