I disagree with that. I think that sarcasm needs to be intended. And perhaps some people intend it when they say they could care less, but I think most people say it incorrectly because they just never thought about it.

They don't consciously say it sarcastically because they do not need to. It is sarcastic within itself, much like dozen of other expressions in the English language.

Stop being a nit.

I get annoyed by people who harp on the "I could care less crowd."

It's clearly a sarcastic expression, much along the lines of "I should be so lucky!"

[/ QUOTE ]

It's NOT a sarcastic statement. When someone says I could care less, they do not realize they actually are saying the opposite of what they mean. For there to be sarcasm intended, the person must understand what they are saying.

How is "I should be so lucky" sarcastic?

[/ QUOTE ]

Wouldn't the sarcastic statement be "I couldn't care more"?

[/ QUOTE ]

well if you use logic here if we negate the first part changing couldn't to could as well as negating the last part, changing more to less we would have the same gramitcal statement.

my logic skills aren't that up to par since the last time i studied any logic was like 4 years ago. but i think its correct.

the real problem here is that when you say i couldn't care more you are really saying that you do care somewhat. how much you care is the question which makes the statement redundant when you are trying to express emotion of not caring.

its the same with i could care less. if you say you could care less then it means you do care.

when you say i couldnt care less it implies that your level of caring is so small that it would be impossible for you to care less about it then you already do

supposably

irregardless

[/ QUOTE ]

irregardless, though non-standard, is technically a word - it's in the dictionary. i keep a copy of the definition in my wallet and use intentionally overuse irregardless, then when they call me out on it, i make a wager on it's validity-arguing that i could prove right there and then, that it's a word. ftw.

i don't deny it's in the dictionary, but 99/100 people who use it mean regardless. And in all fairness it's a slang word that has made it to the dictionary. Some definitions even state it is an incorrect word that has become used incorrectly enough in nonstandard speech to warrant a description in the dictionary.
