Glo, question for you: What is the temperment of your Shiba like? I hear that they're extremely independent and don't come to you when called etc. To what extent is your dog independent?

I've never been much for cats but my friend was looking to give this one away so we took him in. He is extremely affectionate and I'm completely sold.

The cat and the dog are total pals and are constantly hanging out and playing together. We feared it could have been a disaster but it has worked out extremely well.

Wire, please post pics of them playing. I haven't seen dogs and cats play before.

He's independent when he wants to be. And, for the most part, that only happens when the mailman comes or UPS/FedEx drives by. Oh, and squirrles in the back yard.

He's usually good about coming, sometimes. He's very unpredictable and that's what I love about him.

Edit: I forgot to mention he is never off leash unless he's fenced in. He's very agile and hard to catch, and will NEVER come when called, he's focused on the new smells.

my dog is very independent. she acts like she owns us rather than we own her - however, she is also very nice and has a pleasant temperament so its never a conflict sort of relationship

Glo, how is your dog unpredictable?

And yvesaint, what does your dog do that makes you feel like she owns you?

The reason I asked is because I'm thinking of getting a dog when I graduate and I'm reading about different breeds. I don't want to be in total control of a dog, but if a dog is going to act like a little bastard, then I don't think I want that. Also, I've read that Shibas shed like crazy so that's not something I want either.

Well, okay, yeah, they're exactly like cats but they're dogs.

He cleans himself constantly, he doesn't smell like a dog, and he's extremely agile. My dog has a perch on arm of our couch that looks out onto the street he hangs out there most of the day.

Like cats, Shiba's are very independent. If they don't want to be bothered, they'll just walk away, which happens often. But then again, if you want to be left alone for a while, they're perfect for that.

I hate to say it, but I love it when my shiba get's scared. He nudges himself up against my leg and has this cute look in his eyes. Anyway, they don't get scared very often, so it's cute to see them vulnerable.

He's unpredictable because I never know when he's gonna go crazy. I can't explain all the strange things he does, but he makes me laugh regularly.

I love to torture him when I'm eating. He'll sit in front of me and slowly creep closer. When he get's close enough, I stop eating and just stare at him and after a couple seconds he starts to yodel. Then, he'll get really frustrated and start nipping at my face, the worst was when his toof hits my lip and gives me a fat lip. He'll never do any harm, he just wants to remind me that he wants clean my plate when I'm done. BTW, he's a great pre-rinse before you load a dishwasher.
