[ QUOTE ]
I agree with this whole heartedly. You may be fine with the negative EV play for non-poker reasons, but that is not all too different from someone who says "hey, Im just playing for fun" as a justification for calling with a gutshot when they are only getting 2:1 odds. This site does not have much to offer to people who want to make negative EV plays because those plays have some non-poker related benefit to them. [/ QUOTE ] I don't chase gutshots unless I have the proper odds. The only time you see me make -EV plays is when I want to change the way my opponents play against me, I will turn on what I call the "Dog & Pony Show" I become a complete maniac. I play every hand and talk no-stop through the entire hand. I do this for a least two orbits and as many orbits as it takes to alter the way the table is playing against me. Then I go back to tight play. On rare occasions, a -EV play can make you money if you are successful in altering your opponents play. This poster's suggestion that I chase gutshots because I am married or "just here to gamble" is completely false. [ QUOTE ] All I am trying to say is that if my wife had some sort of problem with me playing poker, I would talk it out with her instead of avoiding the problem or making it worse by just ignoring it. She either has two problems, she doesn't understand the game at all and has problems associated with that, or she doesn't like you spending so much time doing that. Now either way you have a problem, both of which should be easily fixed without you having to give up poker or sneak around or lie to her. [/ QUOTE ] My wife doesn't have a problem with me playing poker and I am going to make damn sure doesn't develop one. If you guys aren't thinking about how your poker play impacts your family and taking precautions to make sure poker doesn't damage your personal relationships, then you are the ones making the -EV play. Poker is a game and it will always be there. You wife and/or children are very important and may not always be there. |

I am surprised that you have enough chips to do this -- and if you do, the game is probably good enough that there's no need to resort to such antics. [ QUOTE ] On rare occasions, a -EV play can make you money if you are successful in altering your opponents play [/ QUOTE ] This can be true. But you need to be around long enough to exploit it. Spewing chips for two orbits and getting down to a handful of BBs (with no plan to rebuy) puts you at a significant risk of busting out before being able to take advantage of your new image (I'm skeptical that this ever works, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt). -McGee |

I've been thinking about this (showdown loose play for image):
I think it's -EV for the most part. Any astute player that is capable of recognizing this play, is going to discount it for what it is, And any lame player that might fall prey isn't astute enough to recognize your actions in the first place. |

[/ QUOTE ] Steamboat I sincerely went back and forth on whether or not I should post this, because I didn't want to make it seem like I was piling on in a thread in which you have already taken a beating. I would never waste my time posting just for the sake of giving a complete stranger a hard time, and it's unfortunate that my post came off the way it did. My intention was, and still is, only to point out possible places where you might be losing money. I think that's the intention of everyhone in this thread, as well. This is a strategy message board, after all. -McGee |

[/ QUOTE ] We're not trying to find spots to criticize you, it's just that players at 10/20 suck already. You don't need to give away tons of money with this "clever" trick to get them to play horrible against you in later hands. If you actually play 2 orbits in a row blind for max bets (I'm not sure if this is what you actually do, but it sounded like it to me) I can pretty much guarantee you give up so much EV that you'd have to play a 15+ hour session just to theoretically break even. |
