It amazing how people can make opinions on Hellmuth as a person when they have never sat down at a tournament table with him.
Phil has made his wealth. He won 10 bracelets, plenty of final tables, written his own books, and always plays to win. He does act like a brat but you can not deny his skill of play. Barry Bonds is upon the ranks of Kenneth Lay and Fidell Castro. Bonds grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. You should have heard the stories of him when he was in college. Always acted like he was above everyone else. Hellmuth should get more respect, but it is brought upon himself. Personally I would rather clap if Negreanu gets busted. Just because he gets on my bad side since he is an overtalker. |

[ QUOTE ] I don't think PH gives a [censored] about what people think unless they are top level pros... [/ QUOTE ]No, he cares or he wouldn't always be talking about how great he is. Every interview I've heard with him invovles him explaining just what an awesome life he has/who he knows/what his accomplishments are. Ask him about any poker concept, and he'll have a story about himself that really doesn't have much to do with the question. It is pretty obvious that he still has low self esteem, even with all of his poker accomplishments, which I think is pretty sad. I think he is a solid player and generally tries to do good by people. I watched him play an online tournament (which he won) and he was very patient with the gazillion hecklers who kept chatting at him, trying to provoke him. He does try to make excuses for his attitude and I don't think he really likes that aspect of himself. Unfortunatly, it makes him an unpleasant human being when he's taking a beat. He has earned a lot of the disrespect that he receives, and he probably knows that. I think it's still unclassy to dish it out the way people do, but you can't expect everyone to be classy. Hellmuth has night life's with Negreanu, Matusow, and many other poker pro's. All the pro's know he's a great player and a great guy away from the table. They love to poke him at the table because they know he's pokeable and it's uproaring hilarious. Hilarious the number of people on here who think they know who Hellmuth is. |

Amarillo Slim is old, but still has a bad reputation; in fact his reputation has gotten worse in his old age due to angle shooting and child molestation. No reason to think Helmuth will be respected like Brunson. |

[ QUOTE ]
Hellmuth apologists know full-well that there is no excuse for the childish displays he puts on at the table. No one doubts his talent, but there's a difference between being a class-act winner (Doyle) and a complete brat (Phil). [/ QUOTE ] When did poker become Golf? It is a "social" game and by its nature lends itself to banter. Phil's reactions are genuine...NOT AN ACT TO MARKET HIMSELF. The additional attention is concomitant to his personality. "Chatty Kathy" Negreanu irks me more than Phil, but I still like to watch him play. The Doyle Brunsons can abide the Phil Hellmuths, the Jennifer Tillys can win bracelets, the homeless can get called with "jack high", the master can spit beer, the internet donk can usurp the seasoned pro, and all is RIGHT in the beautiful world of Poker! |
