Do they have a statistic for who's actually paying people the minimum wage?

[/ QUOTE ]
I posted it in the other min wage thread, but the largest group of min wage-makers are those that live at home with their parents (teenagers) at 40% of total min wage makers. How can we expect kids to be able to afford $100 Nikes on $5.15/hour?!?!

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh please, the kids who are slaving away at burger king for $5.15 an hour aren't the same ones who are wearing $100 pairs of sneakers. Do you see why?

[/ QUOTE ]

Why would you think that? My son "slaved away" for minimum wage as an usher and wears $100 sneakers, $100 shirts, $450 skates, $1000 goal pads etc. Not everyone making minimum wage has that as their sole source of income.

Most kids I knew, from a strict utility viewpoint, wouldn't find it worth it to slave away at $5.15 per hour, for 20 hours of work, just to buy a pair of sneakers or a shirt. Especially considering how awful most minimum wage jobs are.

There is a lot of marginal utility to pocket money, even if all of your needs (and more) are met. I can afford to give him everything he wants (within reason), and I could use him for things that have a lot more utility to me than the minimum wage he made, but working outside the house does develop good habits.

He also learned that he could do things that he enjoys, for more money, if he put forth some effort to find alternatives to the ushering job. Hopefully a lesson he carries with him.

Lot's of kids work min wage to buy the [censored] they want. After all, what other way can they get money.

Didn't you have a part time job in high school.

High school kids have pretty much two options.

1) Minimum wage job

2) Sell weed

yes, I've been working continuously since I was 15. In High School I knew I needed to save money for College because my single parent would not be able to give me much towards it. Most of my friends who worked were also saving for College.

My point was that most of the kids I knew no longer "wanted" [censored] like $200 sneakers when the realized it meant they had to slave away 40 hours in front of a broiler or in front of a cash register to get it.
