i agree. and i think it really shows at 2+2. over the past year this site has changed and the anger and personal attacks seem at times to have replaced the great poker discussions that used to exist here. additionally, sitting at a table live seems filled with mostly unhappy angry people. maybe it was always that way, and i never noticed, or maybe it is getting worse.

I'd love for Ed to debate Gary Larson.

I can't even imagine what they would debate.

I have only been playing for 3 years and I don't think I notice much difference in the meanness. It has always caught me off-guard.
Perhaps it was changing gradually enough that I just haven't noticed it.

but the cussing and what-not on Party when I first started there around Sept, 2003 was pretty bad.

First site I ever played poker on (before I had even played live) was PokerStars in Feb, 2003.
Some guy told me what an idiot I was when I called an all-in with A9o on the first hand of an SNG. Mentioned something about a 'crap-hand like that' and he basically made me aware that what I did was a really bad play.
I was so new that I didn't even know there WAS such a thing as a crap-hand (so I googled for poker strategy articles and made my way to 2+2 eventually).

I remember possibly the first ever hand I posted in small-stakes strategy around July, 2003. A B&M 3/6 hand where I gave the relevant details and told another player what I had folded and that he had looked at me like I was a retard for folding as I did.

More than one 2+2'er flat-out told me, "He was correct. you are a retard."

i came on legitimately asking about a hand I was afraid I had mis-played and also admitting that I was still fairly new and still learning. I don't believe I was so cocky as to insist that I knew everything about the game.

But the 'retard' comments that I received were quite intimidating and I remember other posters commenting how intimidating it can be to post in the strategy forums for fear of getting called a moron.

It is true that eventually a couple nice posters answered some of my very basic Q's and follow-up Q's and helped me on my way. I think Nottom might have been one who helped me out (perhaps Homer as well).

I understand getting disillusioned with some of the rudeness on these forums (and elsewhere) but I'm not convinced that we just remember the "good-old days" more fondly for some reason.

I'm not saying that everybody else is incorrect if they think it's gotten worse. I'm really not sure.
but I do know that it wasn't all super-peachy 3 years ago either.

I experienced some of this myself yesterday:

I get all-in with a set against a guy with AA. He loses, and then he says "OMFG, I lost again".

Im like, huh, what does he mean?

So he is like, "OMG, YOU ARE SO LUCKY FISH"

I was shocked. Huh? I had a set.

He was just like talking crazy like they do on MTV. He starts writing Hate filled messages suggesting that I impregnant female members of my family.

I really wish the youth of America spent more time in Church so they could learn to be respectable members of society like El Diablo and company.

Also, do any of you guys know about that "hip hop" music that the colored men created?

Not to pour fuel on the fire or anything Kane, but a lot of your posts that I've read seem pretty mean at times.

You've hit a lot of nails on their head here, I think. Also, it's the nature of the internet that it's easier to insult somebody from a few thousands miles away under the cloak of anonymity than to do it face-to-face. Mason, if memory serves, pointed out years ago that many people who, even in the old days, were attracted to poker were misfits who couldn't really make it in jobs that required human decency in interacting with other people.

If you guys really want to debate, I can provide a forum. Amy Calistri and I have a webcast radio show each Thrusday evening at 9:00 PM EDT called "Keep Flopping Aces" on holdemradio.com. If you really want to debate, you can do so in a forum that can be listeded to in real time by anyone with an internet connection, and it can be heard in archive as well as in a podcast.

I have not asked Gary if he's willing to debate and I have no idea whether he wants to or not, but this issue has blown up so large both here as well as on RGP, that providing a debate forum seems a natural next step.

Amy and I would moderate the debate, and since neither of us have a horse in this race, I'm sure we can keep things fair and consistent with whatever debate rules and format we would agree upon beforehand.

Ed, if you would like to debate Gary, please let me know and I'll inquire about his willingness to proceed. We have a one-hour show each week and we'd be willing to turn the majority of the show over to the debate.
