As far as the popularity of wrestling is concerned, that is completely regional. I wrestled in HS and college in Iowa, and wrestling is an extremely popular sport here. During the Iowa high school state wrestling tournament, the majority of the students from all schools skip classes those days to go watch the tournament. There is no other sport in this state that can claim that. We had cheerleaders, we had peprallies, but its not like we cared either way. Wrestlers dont wrestle to be in the spotlight...its takes way too much sacrifice and hard work to make it through a season. There were people who tried to go out for wrestling for the popularity reasons, and they all end up quitting because they couldnt cut it. This is including a kid who will be splitting time at defensive line at the University of Iowa next year. He thought that he would go out for wrestling his senior year of HS because he was huge and thought he would be good, but he quit within a week because he couldnt cut it.
Im sorry that youve been exposed to a bad sampling of wrestling, but I assure you that its not like what you have experienced everywhere. |

I wrestled for a year in high school; I hated it. I didn't return the next season because I found that it was entirely too much work for something that provided me with little satisfaction, and I didn't like the general attitude of the people wrestling put me around (See numerous comments by former wrestlers in this thread where they talk about how they kick everyone's asses, all the time)

Your worth as a man is directly proportional to your fighting ability. Therefore, asskicking is the most important skill in life. |

I imagine high school wrestling is a lot more popular these days, thanks to the growing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts and the success of wrestlers in the sport - Matt Hughes, Quinton Jackson, etc.

[ QUOTE ] I was wrestling 103 pounds and had full run of the school [/ QUOTE ] Um, really? How much do you weigh now? [/ QUOTE ] Like 175. It is pretty funny whenever you run into your old wrestling buddies the conversation turns to how much you weigh in like 5 minutes. When you suck your weight down to 103 you find later that you really missed food, so you love to eat, that's why I married a women who loves to cook. |

[/ QUOTE ] I was 119 my senior season. Once I was done, I went back to 140 for college during lacrosse season. Then I got out of school and got a desk job and went up to 160, then 180 after another 2 years. I never grew an inch since high school, so I probably looked really fat. Now I'm training for an Ironman Triathlon, so it's back down to 160 for me, but man did I look skinny in those HS photos. |
