Nd4 looks a lot better than Qd4 IMO...unless there is some tactic I'm missing somehow. I wouldn't ever want to pin my queen down in front of my opponents' pawn when I can outpost my knight on the square instead. If there was anything I learned playing chess it was to not relegate the queen to sucking at chess... [/ QUOTE ] 19...Nd5 you mean, and that can be met by 20.Bd2. This white bishop and queen just cover everything and we can't penetrate any more. |

Re4, Qd5, Re1/Rc7. I really like the above. Re4 looks really, really good here. Ne4 might also be worth examining, but I think d5 kills it (maybe f3). [/ QUOTE ] 19...Re4 20.Be3 Qd5 21.Kg1 It's not horrible, but I think it cuts some of our options. after 19...Qd5+ 20.Kg1, we can think about Re4 (then 21.Be3 transposes to the above line) or we can play something else like Ne4 or Ng4. |

It is true that a knight is the most cost effective blockader on a chessboard however 19...Qd5+ is not primarily about blockading a pawn. For a silly little exercise take an empty board and give white the following position two pawns d6 & e5, bishop on e3, king on d5 Give black a knight on e6 and a king at d7 Regardless of who is on move, game over (draw), two pawns down and the knight is not even breaking a sweat |

[/ QUOTE ] I like Qd7 or even Rc6 bringing the rook out, followed by Qb6/Rc8 or d8 with Nd5 blocking his d pawn. I don't think the Q belongs on d5, although it would be centrally located, our Knight would serve a more useful function there. If we are going to counterattack with our heavy pieces, Rooks stacked on c-file on c6 and c8, with Qb6 on Queenside hitting the kingside diagonally with our Knight blockading d5 would seem to be a good strategy. |

There is no benefit to putting the Queen on b6. It’s not an optimal square. In correspondence chess an “if” move like Rc6, Qb6 would be met with…. Be6 and d5, lights out…. |

be6?
the bishop would have to change colors to do that. the little horsey can change colors, not the bishop. |

19... Qd7, ... Rc6, or ...Qd5 are all reasonable moves and it's hard to decide which one is best. 19...Qd5+ gains a tempo and prepares a possible ...Ng4 (or ...Nd7)followed by Ne5, invading on the f3 square. 19...Qd7 prepares the tricky Re5- h5 to soften the white kingside (after h4). 19... Rc6 is flexible and gives the rook lateral power and the ability to double rooks. I am not sure which gives black the most lasting, long term initiative.
