It was 14.5 games on July 14th of 1978, and the Yankees made it up by September 10th. Speaking of 1978, that was the last time a Red Sox player (Rice) had 9 consecutive multiple hit games, as Youk has right now. He's only 4 away from the MLB record of 13 that is held by Rogers Hornsby.

Forgive my ignorance, but was the Bucky "Bleepin" Dent year? |

Furthest back was 14 back on July 19th, 1978. Yankees played ridiculously well from that point on. And yes, of course that was the one game playoff with Dent.

The 1914 Boston Braves were in 8th place, 15 games out of first, on July 5. They ended up winning the league by 10.5 games. I think they went on a hot streak or something.

What was up with Francona leaving in DiceK tonight? He was hanging them for a while and way up in pitch count anyway, could of kept this game a lot closer.

Ah, you can't win 'em all, no sense burning out the bullpen trying.
Besides, the Yanks are coming. We got two out of three against Cleveland, that'll do quite nicely. Let's save the relievers for the more important series. |

Dice K has to figure out this "one bad inning" thing though.
