18.Qd4 Rc2 19.Qxa7 possibly we pause here to see what's possible? Any value in 19... b6 cutting the queen off from d4? It may appear to be a wasted move but how can white punish it? [/ QUOTE ] 20.Qa4 is an idea that comes into play in a few lines. It attacks our rook on e8, so our queen and knight can't both get too frisky too soon. [ QUOTE ] On the idea of... 18. Qd3 Ne4 19. Bb2 possibly Qg5 is a playable move? Seems sort of fishy but may want to connect the rooks right? [/ QUOTE ] This seems ok, and we also have ideas (not necessarily on the 19th move) of Nc5 Qd4 Ne6, with or without Qg5. Or h7-h5-h4 with the Qg5. Or Qf5 threatening Nxg3. The same Qg5 could be used after 18.Qd4 Rc2 19.Qxa7 Ne4 20.Qd4. If 21.Bb2 Rd2 22.Qa4 (after our rook again). Then we move the rook and are ready for Qf5 and other threats. |

Qa4 Re4 and the Queen has to move again. Not sure we want our rook on e4 but might be able to take advantage of this.... 18. Qd4 Rc2 19. Qxa7 b6 20. Qa4 Re4 21. Qb5 Qc7 Something like that?? |

We're getting pretty far afield here. We still have to play our 17th move and see what White does.
What were the candidates? 17...Rc8 17...Ne4 17...Qb6 17...Qc8 Anything else? 17...Rc8 still looks best to me. |

I don't like any of the "tempo gaining" moves attacking the queen. White's queen is not currently on a very good square (it attacks none of our weaknesses and blocks the dark squared bishop from getting to d4 where it would blockade our pawn and radiate power on both sides of the board), so I'd just let it be. I like Qe7 here, with the ideas of Qe4 (moving in on the light squares) or Rd8 with the intention of advancing the pawn.

[ QUOTE ] curtains, How long are you spending generally to go over each move so far? Yugoslav [/ QUOTE ] So far....most I've spent on a move has maybe been 5 minutes But I haven't been in danger of losing where I need to make some big calculations just yet. Actually a spent quite a bit of time on Qb3...that was maybe my longest think. I wanted to go Qd1 instead but got scared of a few problems involving my a2 pawn. Perhaps my fears were irrelevant. Maybe spent 10 minutes on that move? [/ QUOTE ] im no chess champion, but doesnt curtains listening to all this strategy get a HUGE advantage, nevermind the fact that you are trying to incorporate "player A" strategy one moment and 3 moves later going with "player b's" move |

The truth is I've been PM'ing TimM and a few others about the "real lines" what you see here is only an illusion. |

OK, make your case. 17...Qe7 18.Bb2 Qe4+ 19.Kg1 Qf3? Maybe 19...Qg4 intending Qh3? This might be good. Crap, quick delete the poll and add Qe7 just in case its good... |
