I have a good friend who played with Barry at ASU, and some other semi-friends that I see on an annual golf trip that played with him too. He was so hated by his teammates that at one point they voted unanimously to kick him off the team but Jim Brock was like "LOL, no". And I seriously doubt jealousy was in play relative to the level of their disdain. He was the best player on the team, he was the son of Bobby Bonds, but he was also a huge dick.

[/ QUOTE ]

So...you know a guy who likes to tell a story about him and his team mates trying to get rid of Barry Bonds? He still tells this story? Pretty brilliant guy if you ask me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Conveying a relevant story about a popular topic du jour makes somebody stupid?

[/ QUOTE ]

I think he was referring to the fact that the guy is bragging about wanting to kick one the best players in the history of baseball off the team.

The goal of a team sport is to win. You probably have a better shot at winning if your best player is on the team.

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess it's about the interpretation of the story. I didn't take it as anybody bragging about anything. I envisioned a group of guys out playing golf, talk of baseball and Bonds came up, so ex-teammates tell a relevant story.

Anyway, obviously the two sides of the Bonds issue will always be bickering, so there's little point of continuing to bang heads against the wall.

DrewDevil you've had two days and you still can't wrap your mind around this.

[/ QUOTE ]

What I can't wrap my mind around is this line of thinking:

Of course everyone knows Bonds took steroids, it's obvious >>>> however, there hasn't been an indictment/suspension/proof beyond a shadow of a doubt >>>> therefore, it's not a "fact" that Bonds took steroids

Whatever.

It's so naive to think that we should care as much about someone in AA who tests positive vs. Bonds who maybe just maybe took them.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you have no idea who Shawne Merriman is.

[/ QUOTE ]

I go to the University of Maryland, and went when he played here. He's a scumbag (who also allegedly sexually assaulted some women on campus), and the steroids thing with him has made me hate him even more. But thanks anyways Jack

Wow, why the dickish tone? Totally unnecessary.

The guy in question has been a friend of mine for 10+ years. I see him all the time. Baseball was his life for many years. He likes to tell stories and has a lot of interesting ones to share, both about baseball and his work as a firefighter. Among these stories are the aforementioned Bonds one as well as some others about Bonds that I can't remember but that weren't flattering. I also recall the Bonds-related stuff being verified by the other guys I know who played with him.

At no point did I imply that he just runs around bitching about Bonds to anyone who will listen, and again your post was dickish and uncalled for.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think not think I was dickish at all. Not my really my intention, but I guess that's how it came across.

It's just plain foolish though for a team to vote Barry Bonds off of their team. I could not imagine anyone being that huge of an [censored].

[/ QUOTE ]

Have you ever played a sport above the high-school level before?

[/ QUOTE ]

I have, I played college baseball, we had some huge douchebags on the team, but they were good, and it never even occurred to anyone to kick them off. They helped us win. I was a lovable guy, but I sucked balls, and they would have much rather kicked me off the team. I simply cannot comprehend how having a jerk on your team can possibly negatively effect your team performance. Are guys seriously striking out because Mike comes up behind me and [censored] him, no way is he getting another RBI? Please kick THAT guy off the team, the selfish baby, not the jerk, because the baby actually IS hurting the team.

Otherwise, yeah, post-game parties probably sucked when BB was on the team. I guess you could just not invite him.

And no,I dont feel the same disdain for some nobody or barely league average player who gets busted for 'roids, because they're not swimming in millions upon millions and breaking records like Bonds. They're trying to stay afloat in the MLB to make a living. Call that morally dishonest or whatever, but im less likely to hate a guy who juiced because it gave him the opportunity to be a major league ballplayer.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can't pick and choose when to apply morality, dude. That's like saying it's less wrong for a homeless man to rob a bank because he's broke than it is for a rich man.

[/ QUOTE ]

Uhhhh, this is done all the time in our society and in our criminal justice system when determining punishment.

You'd think a group of supporters that love to point to the criminal justice system's lack of an indictment as the only evidence needed to clear Bonds from wrong doing would know this.

I'm so suprised on people's views of steroids. This can't be what the country thinks of it, it has to be just statheads view, right?

I think the whole point of the story is that Bonds was such an enormous douchebag that his teammates wanted him off the team despite the fact he was the best player on the team. Yes, it seems unfathomable, so therefore wow, Bonds must be one of the biggest douchebags of all time.

It's a striking example of how the bad >>>>>>>> the good with Bonds.

Which was tuq's whole point.

bonds took roids. can i state it as absolute fact...no

[/ QUOTE ]

But when the rules explicitly state "a player is only considered to be in violation of this policy if he fails an MLB administered drug test."????

It's a black and white issue as far as the rules are concerned, and I'm not talking about race.

If you hit the ball on this side of the line, it is foul.

If you hit it on the line or on that other side, it is fair.

Rules are rules. The media can't just go ignoring them or twisting them to fit their desired outcome just because they don't like a guy.

Of course, they can in the court of public opinion, and they most certainly have....but that doesn't change what is spelled out in black and white in the rules, nor the fact that Barry hasn't broken them.

Let's review:

"...a player is only considered to be in violation of this policy if he fails an MLB administered drug test."

Barry Bonds has done this ZERO times.

"(d) A fair ball passes over a fence or into the stands at a distance from home base of 250 feet or more. Such hit entitles the batter to a home run when he shall have touched all bases legally."

Barry Bonds has done this 753 times.

Addding his 3 ITP HR's --->

That gives us a total of 756 home runs...
...minus the zero steroid policy violations...

EQUALS....

Home Run King.

And let us not forget....the MLBPA fought vigorously to exclude blood testing, which is the only reliable method of detecting HGH-- and stood equally as firm on the insistence that the testing policy be limited in scope to only MLB administered tests....(wouldn't want those police tests after a wayward traffic stop being used).

The irony of course being... every single active MLB player at the time of the negotiations approved of and voted in favor, via proxy, of the verbage of this agreement.

Except for one. The one that wasn't a member of the MLBPA.

The one and only Home Run King.

If anything, Barry Bonds is the least culpable of all active major league players in the way the steroids policy was agreed about and employed.
