[ QUOTE ] Looks like I'm headed to a federal prison for a minute. What are the major differences between FEDS and state? [/ QUOTE ] I don't know much about Federal prisons, but I would assume they aren't much different. I do know that you usually get sent to a Federal prison that's not in the same state where you commited your crime. [/ QUOTE ] There is no such rule. It may happen that a person gets sent out of the state a majority of the time, but that is a function of bed space, rather than any policy against keeping people in state. In fact, federal judges usually have no problem recommending that the Bureau of Prisons designate a person near to their family. While that request is not binding, the Bureau of Prisons usually takes it into consideration. |

[ QUOTE ]
Are you participating in a 12-step program? If not: do you think will be able to sustain long term abstinence in isolation from other recovering addicts? [/ QUOTE ] I did a drug treatment program while locked up, and just finished a 6 month Controlled Substance Abuse Program. It didn't really follow the 12-Step model, though. It was a group class with education about the actual effects of drugs on the body, and the history/psychology of addiction dependency. I would say that i've put myself in a good situation to not relapse. I'm starting school in the fall, and I also work and spend most of my free time playing poker. The most important thing is not thinking about drugs, and staying away from the people I used to hang out with. Recovery from an addiction never actually happens, though. It's a continuing process... I will be recovering until the day I die. |

I was just trying to let him be prepared to possibly be out of state. |

Did you get real strong/work out alot? [/ QUOTE ] I wouldn't say I got real strong, but I gained about 50 pounds. Most of it was weight that I had lost from doing drugs, however. My body definitely got toned though. |

Fascinating thread. Did you hate the person you became through drug use? How do u like sobriety? Do you give talks to young people? What do you think led you to drug use? How many push ups a day did you do in the joint? Did you read any poker books while you were in there? Did your family support you? Do you think the US needs to reform its drug laws? I know a few people involved with OC's, heroine, xanax. What are the chances they straighten themselves out? What was your masturbation routine like in jail? Is it hard for you to meet girls now? Do a lot of prisoners educate themselves well during their time? Have your views on race changed since you went in? Did you cry before you went in? Have you seen 25th hour? OK, that's all for now. |

Do you believe in the gateway-theory?
If so, what do you think is the determening factor for why it's true; the environment/people you hang out with or the craving for a stronger high? |

Most of these "ask me..." threads have sucked, but this one is quite good.

"Did you hate the person you became through drug use?" Yes "How do u like sobriety?" Love it "Do you give talks to young people?" I'm only 22, but I talk to my younger brother (17) "What do you think led you to drug use?" Bad choices in friends, boredom, curiousity. "How many push ups a day did you do in the joint?" 500 every other day "Did you read any poker books while you were in there?" Mike Caro's Book of Tells, and I read a book on probability but it wasn't a poker book. "Did your family support you?" Couldn't have done it without them. "Do you think the US needs to reform its drug laws?" Yes. "I know a few people involved with OC's, heroine, xanax. What are the chances they straighten themselves out?" From my experience, their chances aren't good. Convince them to get help immediately. Everyone I used to use with still uses nearly 3 years later. I've had 6 friends OD, 4 of them dying from it. The other two still use after ODing. "What was your masturbation routine like in jail?" In the shower. The showers are 1 man units, not a group thing like on TV. "Is it hard for you to meet girls now?" No, not at all. Not sure why you would think it would be? "Do a lot of prisoners educate themselves well during their time?" Yes, there's a large population of people that have reformed and gotten alot more educated... seriously you'd be surprised how many. "Have your views on race changed since you went in?" No, not really. I think there was probably more white people I didn't like than black people. "Did you cry before you went in?" No immediately before, because I was already well aware I was getting locked up, I just didn't know for how long. I cried many times leading up to it though. "Have you seen 25th hour?" Yeah, pretty decent movie. |

Do you believe in the gateway-theory? If so, what do you think is the determening factor for why it's true; the environment/people you hang out with or the craving for a stronger high? [/ QUOTE ] I believe in it to an extent. I don't believe that marijuana leads to heroin, but I do believe that vicodin/percocet and other pain medications can. I think it varies from person to person, and their knowledge of drugs. If someone regularly takes vicodin and percocets, and is fully aware that heroin gives you a similar feeling, but alot stronger, this will lead to them eventually doing heroin. Your enviornment is equally important as the craving for a stronger high, because it's very easy to do drugs when everyone around you is doing them. It's not always necessarily peer pressure either, because sometimes you WANT to do it, and seeing everyone else doing it kind of gives you confirmation that it can't be THAT bad. I was always terrified of heroin, until one day the opiate pills stopped getting me high. It was almost like a day and night change. I met someone who said they can get heroin, and I was like "well lets go". I snorted it until that stopped working and then began shooting it. So in short, the gateway theory has some merit, IMO, but I think it matters on the person. I wouldn't worry that smoking weed is one day going to make you a heroin junkie. |
