most girls will think youre the [censored] as being a professional poker player sounds like a flashy and interesting lifestyle. [/ QUOTE ] yes, sitting at home in front of a computer all day 8 tabling is real glorious. Maybe if you were on the WPT or something and on TV. |

[ QUOTE ]
if you say it with bursting confidence then everyone will be very interested in you and what you have to say. if you say it with seriousness but are a little apprehensive then everyone will be curious but will find you boring. if you say it without confidence fearing what everyone might think then everyone will think youre a degenerate loser. [/ QUOTE ] How true do you guys think this is? It has crossed my mind to just try to be very confident about it when telling ppl what I do, but I'm guessing I come across more as #2 above... |

I actually come across more as #2 also.
I might say it something like, "actually, this might sound kind of silly, but I actually play poker for a living" (yes, I might even say 'actually' twice). One guy I know who I said this too said, "that doesn't sound that silly at all. I used to play all the time when I was in the navy, etc etc." my landlord was over to fix my ceiling-fan and noticed all my poker-books on the book-shelf and asked me about it. I said that I play mostly online and, "actually, it's how I make my income" and he thought it was really cool. "You must be really good. My friends and I play a couple times a week, blah blah blah" (no, I didn't try to get myself invited). |

yep...girls and, more importantly, women do not like the professional poker player thing (unless you are absolutely rich). It's the whole evolution, looking for security thing.
I always say, "I'm self employed and work in financial risk/ money management. I've run my own business for a few years now and it's a great feeling to be a successful entreprenuer." If they ask a follow up, I say "I look for short-term positive ev situations and help move alot of money around for those that don't know better." Only if you are getting routinely laid and dating the woman in question should the poker thing come up. MyTurn2Raise pro gambler by day pusshound by night |

The only girls I've ever told have thought it was the coolest thing ever. [/ QUOTE ] It doesn't surprise me people get difference responses, it all just depends on your confidence/way you say it. Saying 'i play poker' makes it sound like a video game you play while you should be looking for work, while 'professional poker player' even while bad, sounds better. |

I posted something about this the other day saying my girlfriend was annoyed with me playing and nobody belives its a skill game that its all luck and your a degenerate gambler and the sad thing is we are all made to feel like that by somebody we know but thats why this site is here man talk to people who know about poker and will respect you for your achievements within the game, i wouldnt worry about it to much though we are all in the same boat :-)

[ QUOTE ]
because it's so ridiculous to actually BRAG about being "short, bald, old, broke and unemployed" that they just can't help but laugh. [/ QUOTE ] In closing, these stories have not been embellished, because - they need no embellishment. They are simply, horrifyingly, the story of my life as a short, stocky, slow witted bald man. Thank you. |
