every gun thread is the same. people rec. all types of guns when someone just wants something simple easy and reliable.

If you decide to get a automatic get a Glock 19. They are cheap and really popular. you can find all types of parts for them dirt cheap. You can also find used ones around for around 350$. I have one that I love. If I just had to get one gun that's what I would buy.

My dad just got this for my mom to keep in her car, purse, etc. It's a Smith and Wesson 38 caliber revolver.

If I were you I would really prolly get a little 38 like this. You can throw it in your car or pocket or wherever you need it. They are easier to take apart and clean. They are really cool also in their simplicity.

Everyone knows that shotguns are better for home defense but getting a pistol is fun to take your buddies out to shoot cans and stuff.

I think she got thi sone for around 360 after taxes and everything. They are really light also which is a plus if you are carrying it.

You can get them with or without a hammer. without is good for the reasons above. But I sorta like having the hammer on there.

dude, neither the .45 or the 9mm has "stopping power", they have "exploding head" power...the .45 is definitely more powerful, and expensive...

That Airweight S&W is an awesome carry weapon. When I carry now, it's usually the Glock 30 and concealing that thing is not easy or comfy.

OP,

You need to go shoot a bunch of guns and figure out what you like. That is the single most important factor. After doing so, you can provide the group with a list of guns you like to hear any potential issues that may not have been obvious as well as get suggestions to which you may not have been exposed.

The thing that I don't like about revolvers is they only hold 6 rounds. I don't want to have to shoot some 300 pound cokehead and fire all 6 rounds and it doesn't take him down. Then I have to fumble around trying to reload it.

could someone with more knowledge comment on this? it seems like 6 rounds should be more than sufficient for 99% of all home defense situations.

Yes, it is, he is just demonstrating why people should look into things before deciding on buying a guns, and practice with them. there is going to be no difference in what an intruder can do to you betwen 3 and 6 shots. And there should be no difference between 1 shot and 6 if you practice enough, but sometimes there is. but thinking you need to pump someone w/ 6 rounds before you are "safe" or at least able to run away is crazy.

These situations are crazy though, I've read stories of guys being shot full on in the chest with #00 buckshot from a 12 gauge and kept coming.

I dont think that's an accurate percentage. A lot of that practice goes out the window when you perceive a threat against your life and begin shooting wildly.
