I was disputing the common arguments against the kind of artists that are usually brought up. Also note that Eric Clapton seems to understand that a full blues album is not a good idea, as his albums tend to mix it up with blues and general rock and roll (yep, I am a fan)

What of Blind Wilie McTell, Bobby Bland (I actually like him), BB King, Willie McGee, Kenny Wayne Shepard (surprising he never made it with all the hard marketing behind him). Yep, I could rattle off more, and I don't have to look at my IPod to do it either (not that they are on it).

Since there are fans here, please explain it to me. Rather than tell me about history. Also, do either of you play music? And do you listen to it exclusively at home, or in a concert venue. I pointed out that I don't mind it so much for live performance.

I find the stuff very repetitive

[/ QUOTE ]

See man, that's what you don't get. You don't "listen" to the blues...You LIVE the blues.

hahaha, just kidding. That's ridiculous coming from anyone on the internet.

Clapton has put out pure blues albums. Again, I point you to his recent Robert Johnson album, and his material from when he was with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. As well as his Cream stuff, which I consider to be blues, as do the former members of the band. Also, From the Cradle?

I'm not sure what you wanted us to explain - the reasons we love the blues? My biggest reason is I love improv, and the blues is one of the biggest mediums for it. Yes, I play guitar, and play mainly blues/blues rock/blues funk/etc, as well as some other styles. If I didn't love improvisation, I probably wouldn't be playing the guitar. So that's really what the blues comes down to for me - it's never repetitive, it's always different. You can go to see Clapton 5 times and it'll be different each time. You can see different artists and they're totally different. It's how one note can just blow you away, send shivers down your back, make you choke up. I don't listen to it exclusivley anywhere. I think I do the most "active" listening while driving, but yeah, I listen to a lot at home, and less in concerts, but I've seen Clapton twice in the past 2 years, Cream last year, BB King last year, etc etc etc.

I would agree and say that most of the blues I listen to IS live, the live versions/jams of Cream are incredible, live Clapton in general is usually pristine.

I'm only 19, so maybe one day it will get repetitive to me. I've been broadening my horizons a lot lately though, thanks in part to a thread on Classical music in this forum.

And I know I'm making it seem like Clapton is my favorite musician, but believe it or not, Billy Joel is. Ain't nothin blue there :P

REO Speedwagon. I guess that sounds funny now but one would have to be old enough to remember how much the shiznit they were when 'High Infidelity' was on the charts. Gawd they sucked.

[/ QUOTE ]

Back in the early 80's, REO Speedwagon won a national poll: "Which band would you hire to play at your high school graduation party." LOL. Van Halen came in 2nd.

i also think the doors are wayyyyyy underated. i feel they re a much better band then say the Who who imo are way overated. if keith moon wasnt in the Who i think they would have nowhere near the notoriety they have.

[/ QUOTE ]

you're pretty far off base here. The doors are rated pretty much right where they should be. None of the musicians in the doors are all that great and the doors wrote good solid songs. In fact, some of the insane devotion to them does make them a bit over rated. But, even attempting to claim that the Who wouldn't be anything w/o Moon's antics is extremely short sighted. The Who were a band with excellent musicians in the entire band. Daltrey's vocal range is flat out amazing, Townsend's soloing and writing is second to none, and Enstwistle was a very under rated bassist who was able to handle some very difficult music. Let us also not forget that The Who were also forefathers to Hard Rock, Punk, and Metal. I should also mention that they invented teh Rock Opera Genre and with Both Tommy and Quadrophenia created some of the most amazing music of the past 40 years

DMB - They are an ok band that is WAY overrated. Dave is a solid guitarist and has a unique voice that some people can't stand. The drummer is BY FAR the best musician in the group and makes the band IMO. Everyone else is pretty replaceable.

The Who - One word "Tommy", not overrated.

While I agree that saying The Who without Moon isn't good is really off base, I wouldn't say Townshend's soloing was what made up for it, or that Entwisle is under rated. He's considered one of the best bassists of all time by most classic rock fans, which he definitly is. Townshend's writing and his rhythm guitar made up a lot of the band too, as well as Daltry. I saw them in 2004 at MSG, in a concert that most critics considered to be the best they had ever done. Even without the Ox or Keith Moon - and it was an AMAZING concert.

Lester Bangs: The Doors? Jim Morrison? He's a drunken buffoon posing as a poet.
Alice Wisdom: I like the doors.
Lester Bangs: Give me the Guess Who. They got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic.

The Smiths are probably the most overrated band ever in my mind, but thats probably just because I dont gettit at all.
As far as musicians go its pretty difficult to say that anyone is over or underrated without having spent time with them and watched them play and write, Regina Spektor seems amazingly overrated though.

As for a musician I think is over-rated..I give you Kurt Cobain!

[/ QUOTE ]

Seriously??? This guy started an entire genre (alternative rock)

[/ QUOTE ]

Um...not exactly.

He helped influence it, but he certainly didn't 'start' it.

That said, he was a great songwriter.

Tommy is a pretty stupid concept album, even though there's a fair amount of good music on it. Who's Next and Live at Leeds are muuuuuch better proof that they're not overrated, imo.
