[ QUOTE ]
uhhh duncan's "Supporting" cast is impressive. He has a top 5 NBA PG in parker, the best 6th man (Manu) an aging SG whoWAS a perennial all star (Finley) two of the most accurate 3ptshooting veterans toEVER play the game (Barry and Horry) one of the, if the THE BEST, perimter defensive SFs in Bowen, as well as a few scrappy big men. (Elson and Oberto, Oberto has impressed me bigtime) [/ QUOTE ] I agree with all that. But this . . . [ QUOTE ] If duncan was NOT on the team, the spurs would still makethe western playoffs, which is a HUGE deal. [/ QUOTE ] . . . is just ridiculous. They wouldn't be better than the Clippers without Duncan. |

[ QUOTE ] but he never blocked a shot OOB. Never in his entire career. That is mythology [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] whether or not it's true, I think it's clear from replays that he made it a point to block the shot & get the ball after. that's largely a lost art these days, which is really dumb. |

I will do two separate rankings
Dominance Wilt Most dominant ever. He was a monster esp for his era. Shaq He could have won twice as many championships if he kept in better shape, stayed healthy, and ever learned how to shoot foul shots. In his prime no one could guard him. Kareem Offensive Juggernaut. He was unstoppable Russel has to be mentioned for his defense Duncan Very efficient outside of his foulshooting he has no real weakness This is just shear dominance if you want to argue skill or championships my list looks a lot different. |

Kareem has to be mentioned along with Wilt Chamberlain and Shaq as probably the 3 most dominant centers ever. When he went by Lew Alcindor(with the fro) he was basically unstoppable offensively, and one of the best defenders in the league.
Bill Russell is a very tough guy to rate. I don't think anyone has mentioned his passing ability yet. He started a lot of fast breaks after a defensive rebound that would go for an easy 2. He was an unselfish player in a very well balanced system. I honestly think a lot of you guys saying Russell played on the dominant team or had the better coach are missing something. Russell brought intensity to the court on every play. He refused to lose, just like Jordan. Bill Russell was probably the most complete big man in history, especially when you consider intangibles. |

Blocking a shot OOB is much better than blocking it onto the court, because you're blocking it underneath your opponent's basket. The idea that Russell regularly blocked shots to a teammate in anticipation of a fast break is silly.
Russell was a great defensive player. |

[ QUOTE ]
The idea that Russell regularly blocked shots to a teammate in anticipation of a fast break is silly. [/ QUOTE ] This is commonly held knowledge that Russel had an uncanny ability to block shots to himself or a teammate. Probably didn't hurt that his teammates were so good at grabbing a lose ball and scoring on the break. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] but he never blocked a shot OOB. Never in his entire career. That is mythology [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] I've heard both Red Auerbach and John Thompson make this statement. At my grandfather's funeral (Bill is a family friend) I asked him if it was true, he said yes, for his NBA career, but not college. [/ QUOTE ] Man, I've been a Celtic fan all my life and knew that Russell was famous for blocking shots and keeping them in play but never heard anything like that that he "never" blocked one out of bounds. That's absurd to believe that to be true. |

Easy top 3:
Wilt Shaq Kareem I think: Hakeem Robinson Malone are vying for the next 2 spots. |

[ QUOTE ]
The idea that Russell regularly blocked shots to a teammate in anticipation of a fast break is silly. [/ QUOTE ] I think the bigger point is that these days, you routinely see guys hit the ball as hard as they can, for effect. often times it would have been possible for them to hit it to a teammate or to himself. not all the time, but sometimes, and that adds up |
