there's many reasons why, one of the least convincing being that it actually happens in the story the movie is based on. I don't really feel like writing a lot in this post or reading it again because you guys are bringing my mood down by bashing a movie I liked. I will say that to sum up all the reasons why the ending is good in vague terms, it makes sense and fits with the rest of the story while almost all other endings I can think of would not.

Because they finally got surrounded. They weren't surrounded the whole movie. How are they supposed to hold off when they have enemies all around them AND above them? Do you not understand why they built the wall and stayed in the narrow place?

i have never read the comic however i heard the film was frame by frame EXACTLY like the comic...so the people who keep bitching about no development or the ending was weak, frank miller was not going to veer away from his source material. he's already had movie executive [censored] [censored] with his story, no way he's going to do that.
