The issue, more simply stated, would read:

Does someone willing to torture an innocent cat for pleasure deserve to lose a hand? Most of us seem to answer in the affirmative.

A more interesting question would be: Would you be willing and able to break someone's arm if it was the only way to prevent an innocent cat from being barbecued? And I think most of us would say no.

i thought that was the question. say it is. does it change if it's your cat? what if it's a guy in your house putting your teddy bear from childhood in the microwave.

Dad,

you know what. I'm not getting your point here. I just realized that. Make a new question.

The man losing his hand is worth saving the cat. If the cat were replaced with a dog it would be worth killing the man to save the dog.

Presuming it was the guy about to do the barbecuing I would be willing, but don't know if I would be able.

If you cut the guy's hand off, what species do you draw the line at? Does a mentally competent adult pouring salt on a banana slug or burning an insect to death with a magnifying glass qualify for hand removal?

This thread has been sitting in the back of my brain during the workday, and I've come up with this: Yes, I'd save the cat, even if the crazy f-cker had to lose a hand.

But I'd also feed him to the lions. And maybe I'd lightly toast him with microwave radiation beforehand.

Unfortunately however, this somehow violates the 8th Amendment. Bah.

Why don't you ask the question how many cats would you let fry to save an innocent man from losing his hand?
