This likely doesn't qualify as unknown, but only one friend of mine out of 30 had seen it in college (until he showed it to all of us) but meh:
Boondock Saints: Two Irish brothers accidentally killed mafia thugs. They turned themselves in and were released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and started knocking off mafia gang members one by one. Willem Dafoe plays the detective trying to figure out the killings, but the closer he was to catching the Irish brothers, the more he thinks the brothers are doing the right thing. |

though it was done in the past 14 months, very few people have heard of The three burials of melquiades estrada. This is Tommy Lee Jones' directorial debut and really hits home and is well worth watching. [/ QUOTE ] This movie is amazing. Written by same guy that wrote Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel. Also, somewhat recent, but not seen or hyped enough is The Proposition. Nick Cave wrote this. Here's the plot outline from IMDB: "Rural Australia in the late nineteenth century: Capt. Stanley and his men capture two of the four Burns brothers, Charlie and Mike. Their gang is held responsible for attacking the Hopkins farm, raping pregnant Mrs. Hopkins and murdering the whole family. Arthur Burns, the eldest brother and the gang's mastermind, remains at large has and has retreated to a mountain hideout. Capt. Stanley's proposition to Charlie is to gain pardon and - more importantly - save his beloved younger brother Mike from the gallows by finding and killing Arthur within nine days." Both those movies are pretty heavy material, so I'd like to also suggest Schizopolis. Written, Directed, and Starring Steven Soderbergh it is absurd and hilarious. I'd give a plot outline, but I'm not 100% sure what the plot is. |

Les Triplettes de Belleville
It won a bunch of awards in 2003, so maybe not obsure, but it is MUST SEE. A quirky animated feature. watch the trailer |

I absolutely loved it, but it may not be for everybody. Well...what is? It's a silent cartoon drawn in style that is very different from American cartoons, so your mileage will vary greatly. |

At least 2/3 men and 1/3 women had seen it. But it still kicks ass hard. |

this thread is turning into movies that are somewhat obscure and better than average imo.
