All,

Looks like all the fatasses whining about fattie discrimination may have a valid point.

All,

Also, I've found that some lardos can be really good salespeople. In my experience, the best salespeople I've had have been either super-in-shape guys or pretty big fatasses.

Yes definitely. I don't feel any hostility, but seeing fat people is just disgusting to me and I often think less of them because of the laziness/unhealthy/lack of willpower angle. Not to say there arent fat people I like or respect but I am prejudiced toward fat people in general.

When you see an overweight person for the first time, you really have no idea of the context.

Maybe he's been trying to lose weight but has dug himself into a metabolic hole that it's hard to dig out of, or contracted a condition that's made weight loss difficult and slow. Maybe he made bad choices in the past, but has actually lost 70 lbs. in the last year and deserves to be treated as a hero, and instead you are judging him as immoral or lazy or out of control. Hell, maybe he's an actor putting on weight for an upcoming role.

The point is you have no idea what the *meaning* of his being fat is, by merely looking at him, and therefore are making an error in assessing his moral character based on scant information.

Smiley,

That is pretty close to how I feel. The thing is, all you have to do is replace "fat" with "black" in your paragraph and maybe "unhealthy" with something like "dumb" or "violent" and it becomes pretty much exactly what a lot of racists would say and it would make me think much less of you. Yet, the way your statement stands, it's pretty much how I feel.

I am very strongly opposed to just about every other form of prejudice I can think of except for this one. Not sure what to make of that. Of course, everyone will say "but this one is something people can control" which of course is part of the equation here, but I don't think it's quite that simple to dismiss or all that different, really.

Most fat people I know truly are lazy and have no will power. They sit around on their ass all day eating MCdonalds and drinking soda getting fatter by the day. Then if you go out to a bar with them the guy who's 120lbs overweight is always the guy saying he wont hit on a girl because she's 20lbs overweight.

El D,

Were you surprised to see how widespread the bigotry against fatties is? I've always thought it was the only "socially acceptable" form of prejudice.

Also, do you think discriminating against fatties is less wrong than discriminating against certain races/ethnicities because the fatties can at least work on their physique?

Klompy: "They sit around on their ass all day eating MCdonalds and drinking soda getting fatter by the day." I'm pretty sure they all drink Diet Coke.

skunk: I'm not that surprised, but yeah a little surprised at the high percentage of people who hold this bias, are aware of it, and admit it. I thought there would be a lot of "yeah, me too" answers, but felt there would be a few more people on the other side of the issue.
