Think of TELEPHONING someone. It's like PHONED with out the H. I don't see how typing powned helps people to determine how to pronounce it??

I pronounce it "owned", as it's a mistype, etymologically derived.
My friend pronounced it "pawned" and i begged to differ. I pronounce ZOMG zzz-omg because that's unlikely to be a mistype. I think it doesn't matter in teh great scheme of things [yes that was a mistype, yes i've left it in and sometimes i say "teh" even though this violates my 'pwned' rule]. |

This thread is becoming a jopke. [/ QUOTE ] CANNOT believe we didn't enter that one yet. I pronounce that with a p too. I love the english language and its constant surprises. |

"Powned" has multiple phonetic possibilties - rhyming with either "owned" or "pound". Yet poster after poster types "powned" like it should be obvious. I think the best way to explain it is either like you did or "poaned", as in ryhmes with "moaned". All that said, this is clearly the most retarded semantics debate I've ever willingly involved myself in, so if you'll excuse me I'm going to kill myself. |

au contraire, webspeak is fascinating. I'm sure linguists and etymologists everywhere are salivating and despairing in equal measures about its future.

Dom, So, you are saying that you have actually used this word “in real life”. Please, tell me you were drunk or something. RJT [/ QUOTE ] lol...no, I haven't actually used it in conversation, but when I read it my mind pronounces it "pawned." |
