can we still make fun of queers?

[/ QUOTE ]

What exactly am I allowed and not allowed to say?

For example, a week or so ago someone posted a pic of nation and he is an indian guy or something. I was too lazy to reply, but if I had, I would have said something like "I always thought you were a negro". Despite the fact this is obviously 100% a joke, is this not allowed?

I like Gildwulf, but making any rules at all for BBV is pretty lame. If/when terrible rules start to get out of hand I'm going to blame everyone but myself for complaining about BBV turning into OOT and wanting a mod, which they got, and also which resulted in BBV becoming even more OOT-like. You should have done what I did, sat back and done nothing while letting the fairies like yvesaint complain constantly about god knows what.

I thought you were talking about gild saying we should "nip it in the bud" which is very offensive to anyone of japanese decent.

This is in response to the T-God for Mod part of the last thread, which got locked as I was posting:

T-God,

[ QUOTE ]
There isn't that much racism in BBV. People are just using racial slurs as substitutes for "moron"/"loser"/whatever random insult, if that makes any sense. It's just funnier is all.
edit: that wasn't very clear, but I mean that 90% of the time, no harm is intended to the group mentioned. It's just a way of joking around, and unless there are PMs to mods saying otherwise, I don't think many people get offended.

[/ QUOTE ]

even with your edit, possibly the worst explanation of it ever.

T-God: Ha.. what a <explitive deleted>
racial minority: What?!
T-God: oh, didn't see you there. Don't worry 'bro. I just mean "stupid" or "retarded". We down.
racial minority: *stabs T-God*

What you said is hardly correct, anyway. Racial humor is all about stereotyping, not just attributing a "random insult" to a racial group. If someone's cheap, a jew remark is made; if someone's been robbed, someone jokes a black guy did it; and so on and so forth.

By the way, I'm not PC, and I think this rule is lame. I think racial jokes are often pretty funny and it's easy to spot who's joking and who's not. Then again, it's a big messageboard, so who knows who gets offended and who doesn't. I just think if they're going to enforce it, then stuff like gay jokes and objectifying women and calling the white man the devil should all be prohibited, too. And then this would be a really fun, safe place to hang out and get along! Yayyyyyy TEAM!

[/ QUOTE ]
Just because they're a minority means they will stab me? I'm offended, sir.

The situation you described is different than what we're doing here though. I think it's kinda dumb to say that we talk to people online in the same way that we talk to them in person. Everyone in this forum knows that the line of what you can say to people in BBV is far, far away from what you can say to them in real life before they get upset or offended. So no, I don't use many racial slurs IRL, at least not in public, but I do on here because of the atmosphere.

Any you're right that there is the stereotyping going on too, but that [censored] is so cliche by this point that I'd be really surprised if anyone is offended by it.

Jeez, I get home from work and bbv hates me. et tu bbv?

OK, I will try and address all your concerns one at a time:

[ QUOTE ]
Look I'm not for banning any of it. This the internet for eff's sake. But to say the first two are verboten, and the last (which makes up like 80 percent of the posts here) is ok is just downright hypocritical.

My vote would be to allow it all where its clearly lighthearted, and come down hard on people who are directing it at other posters or are way over the top on the obnoxiousnous meter.

[/ QUOTE ]

Here is the problem with just banning whenever I feel like it or I think someone's a racist. It's subjective and tends towards favoritism. For instance, I know Dean and think he's a nice guy, we chat on AIM, talk about poker, etc. If he were to make an off-handed comment about black people in a thread, I would be more inclined to let him off and not do anything about it. If a guy with 3 posts makes a comment about jews or black people, I would probably warn him or ban him. How is this fair? This is totally subjective and puts me in an incredibly difficult damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't scenario. There is some serious racism, etc. going on, but if I ban selectively I am a hypocrite. But if I institute a fair policy across-the-board for people to know and follow, I'm also a hypocrite.

There is a very thin line in this kind of situation on who is joking and what is "irony". I have a sense of humor obviously (I thought Borat was genius) and I am willing to let things slide to a point. But if someone makes a dumb comment and some guy with 5000 posts says "lol ur such a sp*c" or "lol k*ke" it shows the guy with 1000 posts that that's ok. And that sets the whole tone for BBV.

Does that make sense to anyone?

Also, Kiwi and Dean are banned for a week.

No dude, this is OK.

If you say "I always thought you were a Jew." it's banning time!

The problem is that people are starting to push the envelope of what is light-hearted and what is not and it isn't always easy to tell the difference.

Hence a ban on all of it for now.

WTF? I'm not the mod. My HO (Lawl, humble opinion, not being misogynistic or anything) anyway, FWIW, which is nuttin.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is exactly why there is a sticky on racism and not other forms of prejudice right now such as misogyny, etc. I honestly don't think the other stuff has gotten out of hand, but racism has picked up steam pretty heavily and people need to be reminded that regardless of the BBV free-for-all style, 2p2 has some rules that are enforced or at least should be across the board.

gild,

I think that most people are saying that they're OK with you using your judgment in these cases. If some people have a long/good history and do something questionable, use your judgment. Short/bad history? BAN.

It doesn't have to be fair, IMO. Just do your thing. It will be much more entertaining if you wield your MOD POWERS recklessly.

That makes sense. I think CaptainBusto summed it up nicely with what's a joke and what's blatant racism. T-God claims we all know what the line is and no one is offended, but how can I (or you, actually) say that?

Really.. all I ask is that I can say "nigga plz" from time to time.
