Who was the guy who did Almost Famous? Cameron Crowe? He's done some good movies.
Also, Michael Mann has done a lot of stuff I've liked, Heat, Ali, Last of the Mohicans, Thief, and Manhunter come to mind. I hear rumors that he's a tough guy to deal with, though, but I sure like his movies. |

Oliver Stone's list should include JFK. As inaccurate as it is, it's truely exceptional film making.
I'll Add Wim Wenders: Wings of Desire Paris, Texas The American Friend The guy is a visual poet. His dialogue is deeply philosophical and lean in usage. He's extremely underrated. |

[/ QUOTE ] Okay, that demands a story/trip report [/ QUOTE ] Well, mainly he kept the post production crew working 24/7. LITERALLY. During the mix we had 4 separate dub stages going, doing mixing and pre-dub. Mann and the head mixer Jenkins would work from 8 AM to 3 or 4 AM the next morning, only breaking to lines of blow to keep them going. 7 days a week. Mann's daily notes on the mix consisted of things like "Val Kilmers line "yes I Know" - the emphasis should be on "yes" and "I Know". or "Raise the "I" on Ashley's line at 697' by 1 Db." and on for 28 pages. Near the end, he actually missed his release date and released a WEEK late (unheard of, but this is the power he has). Picture editors were hired on as assistants, and found passed out on the floor in change rooms through out Todd-AO sound, waiting for elements to come in from the lab. People were working on quad overtime with meal penalties and 19 day penalties. Guys that would normally be making $30 an hour were making $135 an hour. The entire crew wandered the halls like zombies, mumbling to themselves. I asked the question "has anyone noticed if it's any good", and to that people fell to the floor laughing, the way that only truly exhausted people can laugh. I knew it was all over when, at 11:35 am, after having worked 29 hours straight, Jenkins and Mann stood up from the console and gave each other a congratulatory hug. Meanwhile the guy from Dolby was cursing "was are SO [censored] to make this deadline". But in the end it's a good film, and Michael Mann is a genius. AB |
