JB,
Macallan is a pretty simple one, just like the name Allen. However, some distilleries are much tougher. http://www.peatfreak.com/art-distill...nunciation.php That'll help. |

Blends Chivas 12 Chivas 18 Dewar’s White Dewar’s 12 Johnnie Walker Red Label Johnnie Walker Black Label Johnnie Walker Green Label Johnnie Walker Gold Label Johnnie Walker Blue Label Michael Couvreur 12yo [/ QUOTE ] All these and no Royal Salute 21? Imo, Chivas 18 is worth the extra $ over Chivas 12. Not so sure RS21 is worth the extra money over C-18 though. It's alot smoother, but abit more spendy. Though I do wonder how it would compare to JW-Blue. JW-Black seems comparable to Ch-12 and 18, so I'm guessing the other would be close. b |

Pete: Regular Laphroaig ($30) is 86 proof. Cask strength Laphroaig ($59) is something like 110 or 114 proof. The 10yo quarter cask ($48) comes in right in the middle at 96 proof. So, a little extra kick, but not a full cask strength. The big difference is the flavor, though. The final part of the aging is done in small "quarter casks" which results in more wood contact that cuts the peaty flavor and makes for a smoother flavor. You still have the classic Laphroaig peaty taste (and that is still the dominant taste) but it is not quite so much in the forefront and more balanced w/ the other flavors. I am a big fan of the Laphroaig quarter cask. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks. Quarter cask sounds very good and I need to try it ASAP. |

Some things I'm interested in: How Red Breast (Irish) stacks up against the other premium Irish whiskeys. Your thoughts on how Blanton's compares to Eagle Rare 17, Elijah Craig 18, and Booker's. Your thoughts on how the Highland Park Scotches compare with similarly priced/aged Highland Scotches. Your favorite Scotch for $70 or less. If you'd ever reach for a Canadian whiskey over an American one (which, and why). [/ QUOTE ] I'm not El D, but I think Redbreast stacks up very well at least against Bushmills' 16 and Jameson 18. It's been a while since I had Redbreast (or Jameson 18), but it has a kind of wine taste that other whiskies don't, and is definitely worth a try. I haven't had Eagle Rare or Elijah Craig 18, but Blanton's > Booker's IMO - not as harsh, more flavor. I feel like Booker's has to be diluted a bit for me to enjoy it more. Also, has anyone had Wild Turkey Rare Breed? I felt this was true of that as well. As for #5, I can't think of any Canadian whisky I've had that has any serious/complex taste, but Crown Royal is still good for some occasions. |

NYers, http://brandylibrary.com/sections/home.htm Excellent place to try out lots of great stuff. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the link. Also, some people strongly prefer Bushmill's or Jamison for reasons other than taste or cost, ordering the wrong one can get you real funny looks/drink spit in, in the wrong Irish bar/part of town. |

I really like rye whiskey, but I haven't been drinking that much of it for a year or so. But I just moved into SF, so I'll look around for Old Potrero. Any opinions on the big label ryes (Jim Beam, Old Overholt, Wild Turkey, others maybe)?
I think 10-15% of the reason I like rye is for the illusion that I'm in a saloon and aloof and that at any moment I might indeed skin that smoke wagon and shoot one of y'all. I find this works best if I drink it neat. But am I totally blowing it--do you think rye should be taken with a little water? And what should happen to bartenders who, when you ask them if they have rye whiskey, say yes and then serve you a Rock and Rye? Skin the smokewagon? |
