In your opinion, what were the 3-5 best "Ask so-and-so about" threads in terms of actual helpful information provided within?

[/ QUOTE ]

huh, i usually don't read many of them beyond a few entries. here's what i'd like to see, though

"ask Nate 'tha Great about baseball"
"ask Dom about being Dom"
"propose questions which will be subsequently answered in a timely manner by Blarg concerning a topic of his choosing"

Pryor-

1. Watched Project Greenlight a few years ago and was fascinated by how directors change the script as they go along. Is this common? Do they need the writer’s permission to change the script? (lol, have I already asked you this before?)

2. Do you have any idea what kind of salary range a sitcom writer makes in Hollywood?

3. Do you feel it's important to make children attend church when they are young?

Is it possible to be an existentialist? Or, does defining yourself as an existentialist automatically preclude you from being one?

[/ QUOTE ]

lol.

it's probably possible, but not in a pure sense. the same way it's not possible to be entirely a socialist. a little bit of existentialism never hurt, though.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks for the reply. I enjoy this thread. I also appreciate the sincerity of your answers. The sarcastic smart guy pose of many pepole on this site gets a little old. Keep up the good work.

As another question you can handle at some point:
Before Sunset or Before Sunrise, and specifically one reason why?

[/ QUOTE ]

*****spoliers for those that haven't seen them**********

though, not pryor, I always love talking about these films. Personally, I'd go with sunset because they have lived life and when they run into each other there is much retrospection for how they wanted to live their lives and how things haven't gone really right because of not meeting each other in vienna, but at the same time realizing that there is still something very there between them and they still realize it but don't want to fully accept it

[/ QUOTE ]

this is pretty spot on to what i would have said.

i think Sunset is clearly the better film, and the one i prefer, but i could easily see how someone younger and more idealistic would prefer Sunrise.

me, i like a little more melancholy in my love stories

[/ QUOTE ]

I definetly agree. I would say that sunset is worth watching if just for the limo flip out scene(though obviously the entire film is great, but that limo scene really bring it all home for me)

pretty common, unless the writer is a producer on the project, you don't really need their input, since you've bought the screenplay from them. but, a smart director will try and get the writer involved in any large changes and the writer always has the option of pulling their name off a project, should it get really bad.

[ QUOTE ]

2. Do you have any idea what kind of salary range a sitcom writer makes in Hollywood?

[/ QUOTE ]

no clue, but i know George and Jerry got offered $13k for the pilot episode of Jerry

[ QUOTE ]

3. Do you feel it's important to make children attend church when they are young?

[/ QUOTE ]

i do, largely because church, if nothing else, will teach children that life revolves around moral certainty, and while some might argue that everything regarding "sin" is relative, it can't hurt to instill in people at an early age some basic principles of what is wrong and right, if for no other reason than to keep the kid from stealing cookies every 10 minutes.

i would take them to a church that focuses less on a Catholic method of guilt or a Southern Baptist method of Republican boot camp, and more on the principles that Jesus extolled: the meek shall inherit the earth--that sort of thing.

it's also perfectly reasonable to expect parents to try and instill their own religious beliefs in their children.

but, saying all that, the most important thing is some version of what my father always told me: "Don't let people rent space in your head."

Sight and Sound 2002 Top Films List (The Top 50 List)

Top Films

Most overrated film on the list.
Film in the Top 10 that most deserves to be knocked down a peg or two.
Film that most deserves Top 10 status that doesn't have it.
Film you're most happily surprised to see on the list.
Films you haven't seen.
Films not on the list that should be.

That should keep you busy.

[/ QUOTE ]

Most overrated film on the list. Lawrence of Arabia

Film in the Top 10 that most deserves to be knocked down a peg or two. 8 1/2, but combining the Godfather films is cheating

Film that most deserves Top 10 status that doesn't have it. The Searchers, Seven Samurai, Les Enfants du paradis, or Metropolis

Film you're most happily surprised to see on the list. Man with a Movie Camera

Films you haven't seen. -- some of these i haven't been able to track down a copy of, some i have copies of but haven't gotten around to yet: Sunrise, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Au hasard Balthazar, L'avventura, Panther Panchali, The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums, The Magnificent Ambersons, Blade Runner, Greed, Ordet...wow that looks bad

Films not on the list that should be. Dekalog. no questions asked

How can films change the world, if at all?

[/ QUOTE ]

i think to say a single film can "change the world" is a bit much, but a single film can change one person's world, and that's certainly something

Did I miss the story about being a roadie for a high school band? I'm curious. Haha.
