[ QUOTE ]
If you mindlessly look at overall stats, trading an out for 90 feet is a bad trade. Outs are precious, and if your on-deck batter hits a single, you've pretty much just wasted an out. [/ QUOTE ] In fairness to the OP, the question wan't really about an out for 90 feet. Rather, it was specifically about an out to move a runner into a position where he could be scored by a fly ball, wild pitch, pball, hit to right side of infield, another bunt, etc. There is a big difference in taking an out to move a runner into scoring position (2nd base), versus moving a runner to third. |

In fairness to cpk, his last sentence talks about moving the runner to third.
Yes, sacrificing the runner to third will enable them to score in a myriad of ways. This is balanced by the fact that a batter swinging away will often advance the runner by sheer chance; a groundball to the right side or a deep flyball advances the runner anyway, and swinging away has the advantage that a base hit is scoring the runner. |

OPS = On-Base Percentage plus Slugging Percentage. It correlates much better than batting average with runs scored, making it a better estimator of player value.
OPS+ is adjusted for park and league average. Think of it like an IQ Test. Someone with an IQ of 102 is pretty average. |

By the way, per win expectancy, B is first better by the average numbers in the bottom of the 9th in a tie game (assuming, of course, you're the home team). If you're the away team it's never better on an average basis but it's usually close enough that you should probably do it sometimes to keep the defense honest. [/ QUOTE ] ok that makes sense now say that the player bunting is very fast, and capable of beating out the throw occasionally, how often does he need to get a bunt single to make bunting the correct play my quick math puts it around 25% of the time, does that sound about right |
