Mr. K,

Would it help to call Levin or Warner's office if we are not from their states?

[/ QUOTE ]???

[/ QUOTE ]

When I called them, neither Warner nor Levin's office asked which state I was from. I'd certainly mention the state I was from if I was within the senator's jurisdiction, but from the sounds of things these officies are getting a lot of calls and may just be marking off a tally sheet.

[/ QUOTE ]

I just called both and both offices asked for zip code and Sen. Levin's office asked for my name.

[/ QUOTE ]

Honestly, it shouldn't matter. Yes they are representatives of their state but they hold unique positions of national importance. Their job is not just to cater to the whims of their state but to think of the overall good of the country.

[/ QUOTE ]

I spent a summer interning on Capital Hill. This Senator's policy was that every inquiry by a constituent got a personal response (it was form letter, of course, but addressed specifically to their concern). That, of course was North Dakota, where there are almost no people.

Funny thing was you KNEW when one of those NRA commercials or Medicare commercials or whatever came on during The Price is Right or Oprah or whatever because a dozen or so people would call all at once, then nothing.

And while you're right that in theory they represent the entire nation, they are "hired" only by their constituents, and thus cater to them foremost as those are who will decide to keep him/her in office or not.

Thanks for the letter template. I just sent 2 copies to my senators.

[ QUOTE ]

When I called their offices they both said they have yet to take a position on this issue. We might be able to have some influence on this. Please help!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I hate to sound pessimistic but that is just a way of avoiding giving you a direct answer.

I wrote to Senator Warner:

Please pass on to the Senator that as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force, I am appalled by Sen Frist's recent attempts to attach gambling legislation to defense appropriations. As a Virginia resident and voter, I am relying on you to put a stop to Sen Frist's opportunism as he attempts to amend a bill he couldn't possibly pass to one that couldn't possibly fail. As a member of the Armed Forces, I appreciate everything Sen Warner has done for the military throughout his career, but I need one more favor. I need him to stop Sen Frist's use of the military as a cover for an attack on civil liberties. I am available at the phone number listed above for further discussion.

Mr K's point should be well taken. As you say at the end, anything can happen in the legislative process---particularly when the Senate Majority leader is pushing it.

[/ QUOTE ]

And if the person in question is an evil man, who will do anything for a vote, it's an election year and he is clearly looking to run for President next time...you can bet on it!

I think that should some minor 'miracle' happen and it not go thru in this next week, things still look very good that it will when Congress gets back in session as I do not see Frist letting up.

I've seen the NROG slide show...at least they are trying to do something...
