LA has a track record here. Apparently the LA AG emailed PartyGaming a cease and dissist (sp?) a few years back, so it isn't shocking to see that state pop up again in this case.

Regardless, this has to be good news under the circumstances, right? (At least as far as US players being able to access their funds and withdraw).

I suppose it's comparatively good news, mainly because it would indicate that the DoJ doesn't necessarily have an agenda to crack down on the entire industry. That said, while this stuff is way out of my depth, I'd imagine there are scenarios where the feds get involved in this case.

Also, note that while PartyGaming closed down 10% today, Cryptologic, which trades on US time, is only down about 1% as of this writing.

When everyone on these boards gets done cashing out after the panic, GrannyMae and Angelina Fekali will be the only 2 players left on the site sitting alone at a table with sit out buttons waiting for a 3rd player.

It's "solicitation" of gambling in Louisiana.

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,9070-2347034,00.html

Mr Dicks is being held at JFK Airport by the Police Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey after a warrant was issued by the Louisiana State Police. Police sources said that the charges related to Louisiana’s strict laws on gambling by computer but that no Federal charges were involved.

Yeah if this is a state issue and there aren't even any indictments yet, I wouldn't expect any cashout problems. This is a big relief for me. Thanks for the status report.

[quoteThis scares me the most. Seriously, our government is taking away civil liberties left and right and 90% of the population couldn't give a [censored]. Doesn't exactly bode well for our future.

I believe that both BoS and SportingBet will accept sports-bets directly over the phone.
I'm not positive about that, but if so then perhaps THAT is the bigger reason why these guys were detained.

If someone can confirm for me that they take bets over the phone that would be helpful.

I was actually able to make a credit-card transaction at Paradise a few mths ago (shhhh...don't tell the DoJ) and it showed up on the bill as some sort of '1-800 toll-free bet' transaction or something like that.

Taking bets over the phone is more directly in violation of the LETTER of the law of the 1961 wire-act I believe.

But even if you had a site that only accepted sports-bets via the internet there's no freaking way I would be stepping foot in the U.S. these days.

I guess there's going to be some demand to get from London (and other cities) to Costa Rica without stopping over in the U.S.

I just checked Expedia because I'm curious and I quickly see that one can get from London to Mexico City via Montreal or Toronto (and then can non-stop from Mexico City to Costa Rica).

Or you could go London -> Madrid -> Costa Rica it looks like (I only found non-stop going FROM Costa Rica TO Madrid though).

that was just a quick search out of curiousity.
They obviously need to find some way to get back and forth without stepping in the U.S.

It's simple. Don't travel to or through the U.S. if you're an exexutive of a gaming opertor.
