Of course Steinbrenner would put him in a hole in the desert after season-ticket sales plummet. [/ QUOTE ] if A Rod tells the media to [censored] off, then miraculously rebounds and leads the Yankees on a second half surge and playoff run, season ticket sales far from plummet. in fact, it doesn't matter a whole lot what A Rod says or does. if the team wins, the fans will be there. |

Kneel B4 Zod is of course, exactly right - things players say and do don't keep people away from the ballpark so long as the team wins, outlandish examples aside. |

I'm just glad there is a flip side to the love the sports media shows to the holy trinity of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets.

WPA is pretty meaningless, especially over such a short sample. He had a really bad month in which he wasn't getting hits at all so that probably effects it

Some idiot on JRIB just said that they need to trade him because he "doesn't hit in the clutch", and that he's in the same locker room as the "most clutch player of his generation, at the plate and in the field, in Derek Jeter".
Then Rome asked this guy what about A-Rods G.W. RBI's and the guy said "Game winning rbi's are the most over-rated stat out there. It's not about that. It's about what he does when the game is on the line. He doesn't get it done!" Wow. He says A-Rod isn't clutch, but then he emphasizes to the viewers that he has a different definition of "clutch", than every other human ever. |

I'd argue that while WPA is probably meaningless as a predictor, it's not totally meaningless as a way to summarize previous events. So when Jeter has an OPS of .889, a WPA of 341, and everyone claims he is 'clutch', but Arod has an OPS of .878 and a WPA of 33, it suggests to me maybe there is some truth to the oft-made claim that he hasn't done well (in comparison to Jeter, at least) in "meaningful" AB's this year, while still putting up pretty decent overall numbers.

[/ QUOTE ] which is why there is still one stadium in baseball where barry bonds is cheered. once the player stops helping his team win: see sammy sosa in the 2004-05 offseason. [ QUOTE ] I'd argue that while WPA is probably meaningless as a predictor, it's not totally meaningless as a way to summarize previous events. [/ QUOTE ] not only is it not meaningless, i would argue it is one of the best ways. if anyone who votes for postseason awards wants to cite clutch play as a reason for voting one way over another, it should be mandatory for them to familiarize themselves with WPA. |
