But I'd bet ya that I can get over the mentally aspect if I can get it to 100$/hour I'm fine.

I don't understand the uber-bitching about those that hate hate hate poker, honestly -- maybe it comes with uber-ABC'ing while playing 8-tables (2-tabling higher limits is much more interesting/rewarding), but something odd does happen once you hit the spot where you're making $100 or $200 an hour. Maybe you want to watch TV. A voice in your head pops up and says "Sure, you could watch a 2-hour movie on TV. Or you could play 2 hours of poker and make $200-$400 bucks. That's a LOT of money. Why should you waste it watching TV?" Or hang out with some friends -- not uber-great friends, but a quite possibly enjoyable little social experience. But is it worth $1000? Because if you stayed home that night instead, that's probably how much you could make.

Is that two-hour movie worth $300?

Is that evening with friends worth $1000?

Because that's what you're sacrificing by watching that movie, or spending time with those friends. I mean, the movie can't be THAT good, and that evening can't be worth $1000, can it?!

Gets pretty [censored] up if you let it. Me, I'm a lazy hump, and play worse when I force myself to get hours in, so I can usually dodge those questions. But they're always in the back of my mind, and I bet that for some, a lot more than most.

You can't rely on being able to do excel shortcuts with your left earlobe to get you by in life forever, young man!

Heh heh. I think I scared him when I was telling him about the new version of Excel coming out. Will those magic shortcuts be any good?

Grisgra, you are so right... vacations, man, I love to take them... but when you start figuring the opportunity cost to be something in the neighborhood of 10k... Damn, is chasing young ass in Mexico really worth it?

Of course there is the argument that we should be playing as much as we can becasue we are making so much money now.

This is a reasonable argument, but I don't subscribe to it. I've never really been that concerned with making tons of money. The only reason I play is to have just enough money to do fun things like drink and travel.

Although I am a pro now, I only play like 2 hours a day or so. I get up at like 2pm, and by the time I shower, eat, go to the gym, and play a bit of poker, it is time to go party.

Basically, I just think that the "play as much as you can" mentality is not necessarily the correct one. If you start hating poker that much, it becomes like any other job. The reason i love poker is because i enjoy playing it and it gives me the free time and moeny to enjoy this part of my life.

like vehn said about ego, eventually a lot of the 'opportunity cost' things start going away. Not completely...but I think putting in a solid ammount of hours helps with this, because at least I can't put infinite hours in anyhow, I need breaks anyhow so yeah. I still think of a lot of things economically...like cleaning for instance. We pay people to clean our apartment...cause I'd rather just play poker during that time and make more money than I'd save cleaning and I'd much rather play poker so it's kind of a no brainer.

Unless you need a ton of money to start a business or something (and you're very certain this is what you want to do), it's silly to kill yourself putting in all those hours. Everyone thinks they'll be happy if they can retire early, but many aren't. You eventually get bored. Talented, intelligent people usually find themselves wanting to do something.

Poker gives you the freedom to choose a line of work you enjoy (and still maintain a very comfortable lifestyle). The vast majority of people do not have this freedom. Get a job you like. Play poker on the side. Be happy.
