[ QUOTE ]
no, its also the fact that he takes 66% of her paycheck...wtf, are you her pimp? [/ QUOTE ] I don't get the problem with this. They're married, and both working. If he's the one making sure the bills get paid, what's the problem with this? He should pay all the bills out of his paycheck and let her spend hers on diamonds and bon-bons or what? OP:
[ QUOTE ] Of course, when I let her know she chose wrong, and also did not allow her to get the better deal (hey, she already made her choice!), she claimed I was a jerk and I tricked her. I had a good laugh anyway. [/ QUOTE ] Wow. -Al |

Daryn - see my "wow" above.
[ QUOTE ] So I know which option is better, but I also know that math is not her strong suit. And just like I expected, she added her two paychecks up, and they came to about $315 total, so she took that instead of the $300 cash plus 33% of her paychecks. [/ QUOTE ] OP reveals alot about his attitudes towards his wife - basically that he thinks she's retarded. He deliberately set up a situation where he knew there was a decent chance she'd be humiliated. Nice. It's less the actual math behind the paycheck distribution (which, you're right, seems fair), it's more OP's overall condescending, demeaning attitude towards his wife - this is coloring poster's views on the situation I think. -Al |

No, it just seems like a weird power dynamic when one person TAKES a portion of the other's pay cheque. I wouldn't ask my girfriend to give me x% of her pay. I might ask for half the rent, or to pay for the car...but when you ask her to kick up money out of her own pay cheque, it just seems weird (imo).
That, along with the whole trickery fiasco, makes me and everyone else think that OP owns his wife |

We all have things we're not good at, and should be ok with laughing at ourselves and taking some good-natured teasing. Maybe I'm off here, but I didn't see this as an intent to be "demeaning". |

[/ QUOTE ] Jake, I think it became demeaning when OP did not permit her to change her answer. If he would have let her reconsider after laughing at her, then I would be in the laugh it off camp. |

GH - yeah, fair point.
[ QUOTE ] My wife is the yin to my yang. I'm all about money and power, she's all about butterflies and rainbows. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I'm the brains, she's the heart. [/ QUOTE ] As well as setting up the situation in the first place (I don't see what's particularly funny about making your wife feel stupid) leads to my read that this is condescending behavior. -Al |

Jake,
Its not how they split bills at all. Some people are comfortable with joint bank accounts, some like completely separate finances, whatever. Its the attitude reflected in pointing out her mistake and then punishing her for it. I'm having trouble thinking of an example, but it really strikes me as the way a parent would "teach a lesson" to a child. EDIT: typo |
