I have a good friend who played with Barry at ASU, and some other semi-friends that I see on an annual golf trip that played with him too. He was so hated by his teammates that at one point they voted unanimously to kick him off the team but Jim Brock was like "LOL, no". And I seriously doubt jealousy was in play relative to the level of their disdain. He was the best player on the team, he was the son of Bobby Bonds, but he was also a huge dick.

[/ QUOTE ]

So...you know a guy who likes to tell a story about him and his team mates trying to get rid of Barry Bonds? He still tells this story? Pretty brilliant guy if you ask me.

[/ QUOTE ]
Wow, why the dickish tone? Totally unnecessary.

The guy in question has been a friend of mine for 10+ years. I see him all the time. Baseball was his life for many years. He likes to tell stories and has a lot of interesting ones to share, both about baseball and his work as a firefighter. Among these stories are the aforementioned Bonds one as well as some others about Bonds that I can't remember but that weren't flattering. I also recall the Bonds-related stuff being verified by the other guys I know who played with him.

At no point did I imply that he just runs around bitching about Bonds to anyone who will listen, and again your post was dickish and uncalled for.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think not think I was dickish at all. Not my really my intention, but I guess that's how it came across.

It's just plain foolish though for a team to vote Barry Bonds off of their team. I could not imagine anyone being that huge of an [censored].

And no,I dont feel the same disdain for some nobody or barely league average player who gets busted for 'roids, because they're not swimming in millions upon millions and breaking records like Bonds. They're trying to stay afloat in the MLB to make a living. Call that morally dishonest or whatever, but im less likely to hate a guy who juiced because it gave him the opportunity to be a major league ballplayer.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can't pick and choose when to apply morality, dude. That's like saying it's less wrong for a homeless man to rob a bank because he's broke than it is for a rich man.

[/ QUOTE ]

There are varying degrees of good and bad right? See, I live in the "real world" where things aren't as cut and dry as you seem to indicate. And besides, I was referring to my opinion on the matter. My opinion is not equal to morality, so your point is moot.

Have you ever played a sport above the high-school level before?

You actually disagree with this statement? Necessity or duress definitely lessen culpability for crimes. What a terrible argument.

I am disgusted with the news outlets for front-paging the bonds story with astericks. Totally shameful and uncouth. Our media is disturbing, cartoonish, un-intelligent and completely lacking in dignity at this point in history.

Idiocracy is coming.

As for Bonds he is just an uppidity negro that's the problem obv

It's probably a very good idea that you put 'real world' inside quotes given your description of it.

No worries. I just wanted to make it clear that my friend is not an obsessed weirdo nor is his opinion his alone.

Agreed, which is what makes the story one worth telling.

Well there are two different people with two different situations committing the same infraction (for argument's sake). Not everyone who commits 2nd degree manslaughter, grand larceny, grand theft auto, etc. receives the same punishments correct? So is that not "selectively applying morality"? I think you're a troll, and a naive one at that.

I guess two people watching the same thing can see entirely different things based on what they want to see....either that or some folks find it easier to believe his teammates reactions were "half-hearted" because they just can't bring themselves to believe that Bonds is geniunely liked by teammates and they were geniunely excited at his achievement.

[/ QUOTE ]

See, that's the thing. I DID believe that Bonds was liked by his teammates. I was actually looking forward to seeing them jump all over him. That's why it stood out in my eyes that someone like Randy Winn didn't crack a smile when he hugged Bonds and others gave him weak pats on the shoulder.

Obviously, some of the Giants looked really excited, Bruce Bochy in particular, but it all just seemed odd to me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, the hugs were pretty half-assed.

I'm fairly sure the majority of people watching last night felt "Meh, I'll watch 'cause it's an event, but meh, who cares."

I don't hate Barry. I don't love Barry. I just don't really care that he hit 756. It was an event, so I watched, but obviously it's steroid-enhanced, and people generally have disdain for him because he's comes across as a d-bag most of the time on top of it. I don't see what's wrong with disliking a player that was so selfish that he wasn't content being one of the greatest of all-time already, but had to take stuff to make sure he became THE greatest. Do I feel this hatred for him? No, but I can't fault people for doing so.

And lastly, LOL at the martyrdom and "stick-it-to-the-man" attitude some people project in trying to defend and support Bonds. That attitude has already jumped the shark, so to speak.

[/ QUOTE ]

Do the people who think this record was "steroid-enhanced" also think that the weight training, workout schedules and diet modification that the modern players has offsets the race thing when comparing Ruth to modern players like Bonds?

I'm just wondering if its the same idiots or a new group of idiots.

It was in Jeff Pearlman's biography of Bonds. They did agree to kick him off. Crazy.

It's so naive to think that we should care as much about someone in AA who tests positive vs. Bonds who maybe just maybe took them.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you have no idea who Shawne Merriman is.
