[ QUOTE ]
Well, Sports Illustrated doesn't have such a big problem with him. [/ QUOTE ] Peter King of Sports Illustrated all but dismissed Merriman's test violation and suspension in his column explaining why he voted for Merriman to the All-Pro team, writing, "Merriman? In football, when we deliberate for the Hall of Fame, we do not take off-field stuff into account. And Merriman was good enough in 12 games to be, in my mind, one of football's two best outside linebackers." Merriman actually failed a steroid test and actually broke a rule, but SI writers openly admit they don't take that into account when bestowing awards upon him. Bonds has never failed a steroid test, and has not violated the steroid policy, but yet SI quickly rushes to label his achievements "tainted" and assign their own version of an asterisk. But of course, they are doing it to help save the children. And people will argue until they are blue in the face that they don't see any hypocrisy in any of it. |

I think Barry's probably a dick, but the whole thing is unfairly overblown. I don't think it'll matter in 20 years though, because we'll either have gotten over it or will have crowned one (or two!) new home run kings. We'll just accept the era and steroids for what they are, still consider Hank Aaron to be the 2nd (or 3rd) best RF ever, and probably consider either Bonds or Ruth as the best player ever, whichever floats your boat.

tuq,
First you said this: [ QUOTE ] Also, you Barry-lovers trying to defend his character with quotes and stuff is LOL. Guess what, if you want to like him, go ahead! That's up to you, but don't try to make the rest of us like him. [/ QUOTE ] Then you said this immediately after it: [ QUOTE ] I have a good friend who played with Barry at ASU, and some other semi-friends that I see on an annual golf trip that played with him too. He was so hated by his teammates that at one point they voted unanimously to kick him off the team but Jim Brock was like "LOL, no". And I seriously doubt jealousy was in play relative to the level of their disdain. He was the best player on the team, he was the son of Bobby Bonds, but he was also a huge dick. [/ QUOTE ] You see what you did here, right? |

SL,
Good point. I've been presented with ample evidence to dislike him for the past 15 years or so, yet for some reason some in this thread (not RedBean, to be fair) keep offering counterexamples in what appears to be an attempt to justify their opinion. My point was, when it comes to Bonds, the bad >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>> the good in terms of anecdotes and stories over the years, sorry. And not just from an allegedly biased media. |

The evidence that Bonds is an [censored] and most likely a [censored] team player overall is pretty overwhelming.
The evidence that Bonds took roids along with 3/4th the league is pretty overwhelming given he admitted unknowingly doing it. Not sure why people try to argue those points...but given the whole mess of the steroids era I can understand why a lot of people are like whatever he broke the record thats awesome. Its the sports environment today. I mean this is a pretty huge record so in waching it as a person who played baseball and likes baseball...I feel like it should affect me somewhat emotionally..but it doesn't. I felt nothing...it wasn't even the same as when The Sox came back to beat the Yankees when I felt like [censored] but was like damn..I can't believe the Sox pulled that [censored] off..thats [censored] insane. 756 should be zomg thats [censored] unreal...but its not. Its meh..who cares. I think both Bonds and Mark M will forever be the poster boys for the steroids era and as such...until the record is broken it will be tainted. Not to say it isn't impressive even with Bonds using roids...but it still leaves a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. |
