A lot of people in Philly do not seem to be happy with this pick-up. I really don't know what they were hoping for though. This is about as good as we could have hoped for in the current market.

From reading the Reds boards they keep saying that he has good talent and stuff but would "give up" when things went poorly. Maybe a change of scenery and being in the playoff race will energize him a bit. Plus he is a free agent at the end of the year he will surely have a lot of money on the line these next two months.

Since coming to the NL he has a 4.5-4.6 ERA and a WHIP around 1.35. That is certainly an upgrade over a guy like Durbin. These numbers come pitching in hitter friendly Cincinnatti. From all accounts he has a good change-up and is capable of having a shut-down outing. I certainly remember him sticking it to the Phils earlier this year.

Plus, he has post-season experience pitching 12 innings for the Twins in the playoffs with a 3.00 ERA. Maybe not a choker?

People who aren't happey with Lohse don't realize that there is nothing good avaliable. I'll gladly take Lohse over the scrubs we have in the rotation right now, tyvm.

I'm too lazy to go back to the fifth page of this thread and quote myself, but I am very happy. This is what I wanted.

Its precisely because nothing good is available that I didn't want them to make a trade. IE I'd rather live or die with Kendrick/Durbin than trade for another Eaton. That said Lohse looks like he may have enough potential so I'm actually pretty happy with this.

Just saw this and thought it was pretty interesting

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/st...ps_oddselo.php

These are the playoff odds from Baseball Prospectus when adjusted using ELO scores. ELO scores look to "rate" teams based on their current form and gives them a score, much like a chess or Scrabble rating.

On this page, the Pct3 column is the ELO rating for the teams. According to this, the Phillies are the best team in the NL.

Coinflip for the playoffs...Can we land on the good side for once?

[/ QUOTE ]
ELO ratings are a bit sensitive to recent results. The top teams have all struggled a bit lately. However you don't get many points for beating bad teams either, so it is slightly shocking they're ranked first. If they still are after the Cubs/Brewers than we'll be sitting very pretty.

ESPN reported that Phils traded a Util infielder for a disgraced reliever from the M's (guy was sent down and has only 3ER at AAA all year). Anyone know who was traded? I'm guessing Nunez since I don't think we can afford to move Dobbs at this point...

No. We moved minor league infielder Jesus Merchan. He has put up great numbers at AA, but people tell me has no real chance at being an every day big league player...Career minor leaguer most likely; small loss.

The addition is Julio Mateo who probably is good enough to step right into our bullpen this week. Just from looking at all his numbers and splits I'd rather have him in a close game than Mesa, Condrey, or Durbin - possibly more of our current pen.

Mateo apparently had some off the field problems in Seattle and struggled quite a lot last year causing him to go out of favor with their organization.

Ok. they also said 26 yr old, which didn't fit anyone on the major league roster. I just couldn't believe they traded a minor league util guy. Guess the M's really didn't like the kid.

btw, in case anyone has been paying attention Lohse is the best pitcher in the majors to move at the deadline this year (unless something else gets announced)
