Excellent thread.

Based on what you are saying here, a show like OZ is complete fiction. Assuming you watched the show, would you say it is atypical or was the prison you were in atypical?

Looks like I'm headed to a federal prison for a minute. What are the major differences between FEDS and state?

Describe withdrawal. What sensations do you experience and how long does it last? Is it truly as terrible as they say?

During your time using needles, did you ever catch HIV, Hepatitis C, or any other blood related diseases?

I've seen every episode of OZ, and it was an awesome show. I wouldn't say it's fiction, just highly dramatized. Alot of officers really are corrupt, and people do get killed/raped, but not every week.

I don't know much about Federal prisons, but I would assume they aren't much different. I do know that you usually get sent to a Federal prison that's not in the same state where you commited your crime.

Heroin is different than, say, crack because you don't necessarily fiend for heroin. You pretty much want it to stop feeling sick. Basically, you cannot sleep at all, no matter how hard you try, and you throw up until your stomach empties and then you dry heave. It's hard to hold even water down. Smoking weed helps a little, but not a signifigant amount. The worst of it lasts about 3 days. It takes awhile to get back to sleeping well, but the throwing up and nausea will usually go away within 3 days.

Yes it's as terrible as they say. Probably the worst week of my life.

I've definately heard that federal prisons are much better than their state counterparts. It makes sense because the vast majority of violent crimes are state charges.

No. A pack of 10 needles costs $2.19 at Walgreens/Rite Aid/Eckerd or any other drug store. You just have to know what to ask the pharmacist for. I've never re-used a needle or used someone elses.

Are you participating in a 12-step program? If not: do you think will be able to sustain long term abstinence in isolation from other recovering addicts? (I have 6 years in a couple days)
