The places im applying are mostly DOD contractors for the government. Usually you need a secret clearance simply to walk through the door, but some companies are willing to hire you, with the hopes of your obtaining one later.

Telling them i used to gamble for a living will not work...

[/ QUOTE ]

And you don't think this will come up during the background check for your security clearance?

i respect people who try to live their dreams not the [censored] robots like you walking their designated path of society and eventually dieing without ever having seen what's life truly about.

[/ QUOTE ]

The issue isn't the dream, we all would like to live in a society where you can float around and discover yourself, but the US is not like that. You can get out of working a traditional job in many ways, one being poker, especially in your early 20s where your expenses are not that high.

The issue is that your choices do have consequences and the choice to forgo a more formal employment and gamble has the consequence of diminishing whatever accomplishments you have achieved in the academic world. I'm not agreeing with this philosophy at all, but realize that it is there.

Regardless of why this guy is now entering the job field, aiming for some of the most scrutinized jobs where you need government clearance is not the brightest move for someone who is hiding what they have been up to for the last two years. These firms that need their employees to gain clearance will see the OP as damaged goods unlike smaller firms.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course but plz respect OP's decision to try and play poker for a living, now he has second toughts because he can have a (high) solid income by doing what he studied for.
That's normal you want to buy a big house and start a family eventually and playing full time poker is not ment for everybody.

But why berate his choice of playing poker for a living?
He just studied his whole [censored] life now finally he's got his bach and loves playing poker why not give it a go and enjoy some of the freedom of life?
Maybe if he started working emidiatly in IT he was sick and tired of it by now who knows?

And with a story like SALAZAR's you don't have to worry about anything during a job interview [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I think you have me confused with the poster you had originally quoted, I did not berate his choice of playing, but find it pathetic that he can not accept the consequences of his choice, knowing full well that they would exist.

Even with Salazar's story, there is no way he is getting anything with government clearance without providing proof of travels and investment history. You have to swear that the info you are providing is 100% accurate to get clearance or could face imprisonment for stretching the truth. His bar is set insanely high.

no im not confusing you with him i was talking about him because he's the one berating the OP.

And jezus is that how it works in the US?
Lol imprisonment? here in holland they can just fire you when lied during the job interview thats it.
And even then if a year or so past by you could be a garbagemen working in IT they can't fire you anymore.(that's the responsibility of the firm to see if your doing your job correctly)

I mean he's working in IT not CIA of course a firm can do a background check but providing proof of travels and investment history is a little exaturated don't you think?

My apologies, you had quoted me and I guess I was confused.
OP is looking to get in with a firm that does business with the government and will need government clearance, no idea what branch but will be exposed to very privileged information if he needs a clearance. In that process, he has to be 100% honest or risk imprisonment as his application is done under oath. He can make up any story he wants to get into the door with the firm, but he is useless to them if he can't get gov't clearance and any lie he told them will come out.

Lie to a potential employer, awesome. Everyone knows the way to start and build a relationship is one on lies.

If you're an adult, you should have known two years ago that your resume/work experience was going to suck if you decided to play poker. You're two years out of school, and you're just now looking for a job?

Fact of the matter is, you're going to look like a burned out degen to almost any employer by telling the truth. Or, you can lie and be happy with yourself that by lying you put yourself ahead of other qualified candidates. Have fun with that decision.

Oh and finally, you're lying to everyone on this forum. You went bust after thinking you'd make it big, and now realize you have to get a job. Good luck with that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hi [censored].

...

OP, you been out of college two years right so no big deal. Tell em you were helping the family business, traveling, something that can't be checked up on with a basic background check. The fact that it can't be checked up on isn't a big deal because any major problems would have shown up in the background check. Tell your references to not say anything about you playing poker (but don't ask them to lie).

Most importantly, you need to crush the interview. First jobs out of college aren't going to expect a lot of work experience and technical knowledge - they expect to have to train you and pass on all the little tricks to working there. Just crush the interview and you'll be fine. Ask for a lot of money, remember that you don't need or even want the job that much, and that you should actually be interviewing for a better position but you'll humor them with your presence. In fact, you are interviewing them to see if you want to work there. If you think like this you'll do great as long as you don't actually sound like an azzhole. Interview are much more about EQ than IQ.

This is just my opinion so take it how you want.

You can tell them anything...I do it all the time regarding the empty periods on my resume...I literally just make a different thing up before every interview...

The best one is probably "I traveled to another country/state/was out of town", etc...they don't ask much more than that.
