I aspire to earn a living off limit, but first I have to learn how to play it.
I'm not going to say which is more complex, but I do believe that as a beginner NL can be very profitable if you play like a rock and are not afraid to push all your chips in with a premium hand pf &/or flop. Using this strategy, NL is essentially a game of two betting rounds that is usually played out against 1 other person, or on a rare occasion 2 others. Needless to say your equity edge against such a small number of opponents goes way up. Now consider Low Limit Hold'em, and not being able to push people off the "5-9"'s etc? Limit is a game of 4 betting rounds and usually multiway, this IMHO is much more difficult for the beginner, and tight PF play isn't going to get the money when the multitide of junk hands are staying to the end. That's why on any given night, I could probably make a small profit in a No-Limit game, but Limit I struggle. |

I can count one about one hand all the winning limit players I have seen. I can say that I have seen many more adept NL players than I have seen in limit. I can say that it took me FAR less time and thought to become winning at NL than limit. I have seen winning NL players who get creamed at limit, but seldomly the other way around. Why? Because you can be a weak rock-rider at NL and still beat many of the fish. Sorry, NL is easier than limit IMO-- I think that NL-only players are on an ego trip. I still prefer Limit because the art is so incredibly subtle, the losers have no clue how much I out-class them. NL is so in-your-face, that it is obvious. Ie. better action at Limit. And yes, NL players, you can protect your hand in Limit, if you don't know how, you are not a good poker player. |

[/ QUOTE ] no one's arguing that you can't. but you can protect your hand much more easily and more effectively at NL. i can punish a fish who is trying to catch his flush a ton better at NL than limit. |

Yes. Limit makes me want to cry. I need to buy some things to break for when donks cap the flop+turn with me only to river their miracle card. "I knew my 10-4 was going to beat that set of kings, thats poker!" |

am i the only one who can't stand the variance of limit poker? i feel like an idiot right now. i'm playing 5/10 sh @ party to try to clear this stupid acceler8tor bonus and the variance is just driving me nuts. i usually play strictly no limit and LOVE it because the variance is so small in comparison. at least when i get sucked out on in no-limit i can punish the guy with atrocious pot odds if he wants to hit his 2-outer. here at limit there's almost nothing you can do. i'm running back to nl, bonus be damned. does anyone else feel this way about limit? [/ QUOTE ] Im just the opposite. I cant stand NL. And for varience it depends on the player. My varience in SH play is probably a lot less than yours and your NL varience is a lot less than mine. Play only SH for a year or so and you will improve...a lot. Im sure I would too with NL....if I played NL or cared to....but NL has less varience overall...but then again why dont you play SnG's??? Even lower varience....Its more like what game fits you better. 5/106m should still be a fish fest though. Id suggest moving down to 3/6 if the swings are too much for you. Or you could always just buy like 100 party hats if you miss your target and sell them on Ebay |

I cut my teeth playing limit, starting at 3/6 and moving up to 10/20. I was reasonably successful, playing a TAGgish game, and just waiting. NL allows me the freedom to make more moves, play more hands, and get paid off better when I really hit. But...these are all skills I've had to develop after my strictly limit training. Yet, I don't prefer one to the other, necessarily. I go where the fish are...plain and simple. Right now, all anybody knows is no limit, so that's what I'll play. If it shifts back to limit, then that's fine, too. Fish are fish, cards are cards, and poker is poker...these things won't change, even if the structures and rules do. People have been gambling for thousands of years, and show no sign of slowing down(the opposite is true, actually). Part of becoming a good player is recognizing where the most money can be made. So...for that reason...right now...I love NL. Maybe in 5 years, it'll be limit, or stud, or (God help us) Omaha Hi/Lo. It doesn't matter. Every game can be beaten to the point that you can make a profit that is worth having. Else, why would anyone, even the fish, play it? [/ QUOTE ] I agree totally with what you say about following the fishes...it basically measn practice table selection...thats a given. What I dont agree with is the NL is played more than LHE. Sure its televised more....and I dont have access to partys software at work, but I think you are going to find more limit games than NL. (It may be close but I think im right during most of the time) |

If I get AA and the whole table calls with hands like 94s, then I'm the happiest little poker player that you're going to see. If that happened to me every time I got a premium, man ...... I don't know. It just sounds like heaven. |

I would say that anyone who hates limit is probably not a very good poker player and probably almost always a lifetime loser. [/ QUOTE ] Please allow me to retort. Id say most NL players love that they can A) Make bets in the relation to the pot size B) Play pots heads up. C) Bust a fish in one glorious hand many more..... And theres plenty of winning NL players in the world. |
