It's very sad on both ends that 2 of the biggest names in poker (Harrah's/WSOP and Bicycle/USPC) thought the new design was going to be the greatest thing since poker chips.

I mean, did they even look at them before approving the design and printing them and shipping them out? Seriously?

In looking at the cards more closely, I noticed that there is a line at the bottom of the big six and the big nine. So someone noticed the problem, but then came up with a fix that doesn't fix it. You would think that before a product launch, they'd actually try playing a couple of games with the cards.

From the Official WSOP Media Guide :

"WSOP participants will enjoy a new Official Tournament Playing card from The U.S. Playing Card Company. In another first for the WSOP, every day every table of every bracelet event will start with a new setup of cards made of USPC's KEM stock, widely considered the finest playing-card stock in the world."

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, atleast they are fixing one problem by using new cards every day, so they won't have the problem like last year in the $50K event when the cards had been marked from some previous event.

The new cards were actually reviewed in detail and approved by the PAC (Players Advisory Committee). Daniel Negreanu, TJ Cloutier, Annie Duke, Robert Williamson III, Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer, and others are all on the PAC. The PAC looked at several different options, gave their feedback, then approved the design. The one problem with the process was that the players did not actually have cards in front of them, just a piece of paper with the design. Howard Lederer actually cut the paper into the size of the actual cards so that he could evaluate them, but other PAC members may not have done so. The other problem with the process is that I do not believe that the players looked at samples of every card (this is where the 6 and 9 issue may have slipped thru).

Clearly the cards are not acceptable, but it is not like Harrah's or USPC snuck some new design in without any input.

From pokernews.com :

"Daniel Negreanu called them the worst cards he's ever played with. "

and more pertinently :

"T.J. Cloutier, who is on the Player's Advisory Committee, claims that these are *not* the cards that the players approved. (He's also asked to speak to Jeffrey Pollack.) "

Good info, thanks.
Who are you, and where did you get this?

I concede that the 6 and the 9 are a little confusing, and it's probably a pain in the ass the read the board, but that's pretty much it. The face cards and the other numbered cards are fine -- and i kinda like the small angled icon in the upper corners.

At this point I am convinced Harrah's is in some conspiracy with the U.S. Government to ruin the WSOP and try to kill off the poker boom.

I think the conspiracy may lie with the Chinese.

We'll wait for Olivert to chime in though....

Slipping in decks with '69's in them... sounds like the work of Bill and Ted.
