I've mailed my congressman. How should I address my senators? I find this very difficult since my two are John Kyl (has an anti gambling bill named after him) and John McCain (not going to be willing to botch a possible presidential run).

Just to clarify: This is currently a HOUSE BILL, so your #1 priority should be your House Representative. Addresses should be at house.gov .
Email your senators too, but that's only priority #2! |

Word. I took a more direct approach, but stole your last paragraph. Dear Representative XXXXX, I am writing you in regard to H.R. 4777: The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act being introduced by Reps. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Rick Boucher (D-VA). I wish to inform you that I am STRONGLY OPPOSED to this bill and among my friends, family, and business associates, my view is not in the minority. We will be watching your vote on this matter closely as it will greatly influence our future votes in the 10th district. Please speak for the majority of the citizens in your district and vote against this bill. [/ QUOTE ] done and done. thanks. |

Seems a tad hypocritical and makes me wonder [/ QUOTE ] Don't wonder. It's not what you do, it's who you pay to do it. Washington works just like Vegas and anyone who does not understand the concept of grease need not apply for a job there. Your letter is excellent. I am a little perplexed as to why there is not a larger interest in this legislation from the internet poker addicts who inhabit this site. If people think this bill has no chance, they are mistaken. In September 2005 the US Senate rejected efforts by Republican Jon Kyl to ban online gaming in the US. Goodlatte has twice before introduced similar legislation and in 2000 Goodlatte failed an attempt to pass a prohibition of online gaming as it fell short with 60% majority vote. This means he needs just a 6% increase in support to get it done and all indications are that the White House is on side. Wake up. Time to panic. |

being "pro-gambling" isn't a very defensible for a politician, especially since the rake is getting siphoned off into other countries' economies.
i think the reasonable suggestion is for them to ask before voting on the floor about what effects might be felt in terms of relations/economy if the wto imposes sanctions in response to the usa knowingly violating its ruling. saying, "i'm a gambler and i like to gamble!!" isn't much of a sell imho. |

This is all fine and good. However, it almost seems to me that anyone sending a message to their representatives in Congress is effectively putting himself on a list of people interested in getting the smack laid down on them if/when they decide to crack down on online gambling.
