[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I start with Aerosmith. [/ QUOTE ] Incomplete answer. You're four bands shy. The Doors were 100 times better than Aerosmith btw. [/ QUOTE ] Not by the standards you set in the first post, which specifically defined greatness as international popularity and how prolific they were/are. By these standards Aerosmith easily beats out the Doors. If you were to use originality, innovation, sophistcation and influence as criteria for greatness then the Doors would be way ahead and should be in anybody's top five list |

[/ QUOTE ] no they shouldn't. the doors are an overrated trashy LA junk band. they didn't put out that much music, and they didn't change much over the course of their career. they had some pretty good songs but morrison's lyrics and the band's musical innovation are both wildly overrated. |

[/ QUOTE ] I disagree. They were incredibly original and creative (nobody has ever sounded like them, before or after them), and their songs were great, ranging from haunting ("The End") to catchy ("Light My Fire"). Morrison also had an all time great voice. |

I can't believe people are listing bands like Pearl Jam and "Neutral Milk Hotel" next to bands like The Doors and Creedence.

[/ QUOTE ] I have no great love for the Doors but I don't let my personal tastes cloud my judgement. Krieger and Densmore are both excellent musicians. Morrison is a decent singer, a great lyricist (though hardly a poet), and a charismatic stage presence. They sounded like nobody else at a time when originality meant something. Perhaps they didn't change much or grow musically but I think that's because they were very adventurous right from the start which therefore limits your ability to expand.Their limited output is obviously because they recorded for such short period of time. As a personal favorite they would probably be somewhere between 10-15 but as an all time great american rock and roll band they would definetly be in my top five. |

Good post OP. I always have trouble with these things because some people rate arbitrarily while others rate what they like the best and it's not possible to say whose right. I guess my list of the greatest would be
CCR The Pixies Red Hot Chili Peppers Beach Boys Pearl Jam Not in any particular order...I tried to "average" what I like + overall popularity but I'm still not satisfied. |
